The Senior Payroll Analyst provides advanced expertise and oversight in the preparation, processing, and analysis of payroll activities to ensure accurate and timely payroll for all employees. This role acts as a subject matter authority for sophisticated payroll processes, audits, and compliance requirements, and partners closely with HR, Finance, and third-party vendors to resolve intensified issues.

The Senior Payroll Analyst also supports process improvements, system enhancements, and may mentor or guide junior payroll team members.

Location:

This role is approved to be either Remote within the United States or Hybrid out of Ferguson's corporate offices in Newport News, VA in accordance with company policy.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a subject matter authority for payroll operations, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.

  • Oversee and process complex payroll transactions, adjustments, and reconciliations.

  • Conduct detailed audits of payroll data to ensure accuracy and compliance.

  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and third-party vendors to resolve escalated payroll issues.

  • Support tax filings, year-end processing, and regulatory reporting requirements.

  • Maintain and update payroll process documentation and standard operating procedures.

  • Analyze payroll data, identify trends, and recommend process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

  • Test and implement system enhancements, upgrades, or new payroll functionality in collaboration with HRIS or IT.

  • Provide training, guidance, and support to payroll team members.

  • Respond to complex employee and management inquiries regarding payroll policies and practices.

  • Stay current on payroll guidelines, tax laws, and regulatory updates to support compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.

  • 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including complex multi-state or multi-country payrolls.

  • Prevailing wage experience strongly desired.

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or progress toward certification preferred.

  • Deep understanding of multi-state payroll processing, wage and hour laws, and payroll tax regulations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities; able to handle multiple deadlines.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency with payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Workday, SAP) and advanced Excel skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive payroll data with confidentiality and integrity. High level of professionalism.

  • Prior experience leading or mentoring payroll team members is a plus.

  • Experience working with large employee populations and third-party payroll providers preferred.

Actual pay rate may vary depending upon location. The estimated pay range for this position is below. The specific rate will depend on a candidate’s qualifications and prior experience.

$6,858.34 - $10,975.00

Estimated Ranges displayed are Monthly for Salaried roles OR Hourly for all other roles.

This role is Bonus or Incentive Plan eligible.
