Imgix is a chief platform for real-time visual media management, optimization, and delivery services. Our innovative technology empowers businesses to deliver high-quality visual experiences to their customers across platforms and devices, anywhere in the world.

Imgix is hiring a senior engineer for our Core Infrastructure team. We sit at the intersection of software engineering, infrastructure, and reliability. This role writes production-quality software, builds, operates, and monitors the systems that run it, and improves them over time.

In this role, the ideal candidate will design, build, and maintain caching, rendering, delivery and other infrastructure. They will leverage tools like Terraform and CI/CD pipelines, and operate services in Google Cloud Platform. The candidate will design in consideration of failure modes, and bring a pragmatic, security aware mindset to everything they build and participate in a rotating on-call schedule.

This role is ideal for someone who thinks like a software engineer but is comfortable owning production systems end-to-end. The candidate should be equally at home writing maintainable code, reviewing code written by others, debugging production incidents, and improving systems that cause them. This candidate does not simply keep things running, they improve them and mitigate failures before they occur.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-uptime cloud-native services including our core visual media rendering service.

  • Create new features/services that enhance and evolve our existing offerings.

  • Collaborate across Engineering to build infrastructure tools that support building cloud services more efficiently and automating repetitive tasks.

  • Own and influence cloud cost optimization efforts by collaborating with vendors and teammates, exercising sound judgment to balance reliability, performance, and cost.

  • Lead and develop strategies to continuously measure and improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of our services and maintain better than 99.99% uptime for billions of requests per day.

  • Manage and champion the development of cloud infrastructure in accordance with industry standard security practices.

  • Partner with teammates for on-call duties including troubleshooting, incident remediation, and investigating root cause.

  • Create and promote comprehensive documentation in the form of run books and design documents.

  • Work with technologies such as Python, Terraform, Docker, CDNs and various Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services.

What we’re looking for:
  • 5+ years of experience creating and maintaining highly available cloud services with a public cloud provider including multi-region experience with a preference for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) but also open to experience with AWS and/or Azure.

  • Proven experience writing maintainable code in Python. Experience with Rust and/or Javascript are a bonus.

  • Experience in using scripting, automation, and orchestration tools including infrastructure as code tooling via Terraform or OpenTofu.

  • Experience implementing and using continuous integration and continuous delivery workflows.

  • Comfortable using AI to assist with writing code.

  • Experience with Linux based operating systems and their components.

  • Understanding of containerized applications.

  • Performed/monitored code deployments.

  • Experience in cost optimization and efficiency.

  • Experience with weekly on-call rotations.

  • Strong communication skills, both synchronously and asynchronously.

  • Interested in or have experience with working on a 100% remote team.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with Kubernetes, YAML and automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Pulumi, Cloudformation and Helm.

  • Experience with proximate cause analysis.

  • Experience with Open Source Software.

  • Experience with data warehousing.

  • Experience with implementing and maintaining SaaS billing.

  • Experience with visual media.

  • Experience with GDPR and SOC2.
