Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work - whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
Role Overview:
We are looking for a Senior Principal Designer designer to sit amongst our leadership team to help shape strategic solutions and deliver high-quality design solutions for our Atlassian's Teamwork Collection - Jira, Confluence, Loom and Rovo Agents. AI is at the forefront of a new cross-product AI experience. This person will think about how will the future of teamwork evolve, and how can we bring teams together more effectively?
This role operates with high autonomy, determining not only solutions but also the approaches to achieve them. The Senior Principal Designer's primary ownership extends across multiple departments and business areas, driving significant business impact and influencing senior design management and executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities
  • Project Impact: Deliver high-quality design solutions and outcomes across multiple business areas to meet business objectives. Review high-level milestones, mitigate risks, reduce ambiguity, and bring clarity to complex projects.
  • Product & Tech Knowledge: Demonstrate deep understanding of products and technologies across multiple business areas. Resolve complex technical questions, design services/products to meet customer needs, and drive adoption of emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Craft Excellence: Exhibit mastery in interaction and visual design, ensuring seamless and consistent experiences across products and services. Redefine user experience, anticipate trends, and integrate new technologies and tools.
  • Systems & Architecture: Influence the development of new systems and architectures to create efficient and effective experiences across business areas and functions.
  • Direction: Influence the technical direction and forward path of design initiatives to achieve broad impact.
  • Effective Communication & Influence: Build trust and alignment across business areas and senior leadership. Lead discussions, facilitate consensus, and drive influence for the design vision at the executive level.
  • Analytical Thinking: Proactively solve complex issues, provide organizational expertise, and optimize linkages between structure, people, process, and technology.
  • Organizational Impact: Lead through change, embrace curiosity, and support colleagues through complex situations. Proactively provide feedback, coaching, and mentorship to develop self and others.

  • Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in UX, product, or interaction design, with a proven track record of delivering outcomes and driving product direction.
  • Expertise in interaction and visual design, systems thinking, and design research.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence at the executive level and across multiple business areas.
  • Strong facilitation, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Experience mentoring and developing other designers.
  • Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, or a related field is preferred.
