Senior Process Engineer – Graphitization

KBR Sustainable Technology Solutions (STS) provides holistic and value-added solutions across the entire asset life cycle. These include world-class licensed process technologies, differentiated advisory services, deep technical domain expertise, energy transition solutions, high-end design capabilities, and smart solutions to optimize planned and operating assets.

KBR is seeking a Senior Process Engineer – Graphitization to support major capital projects. This role requires deep expertise in graphitization processes and carbon‑based materials manufacturing, with 15+ years of experience in carbon, graphite, or advanced‑materials process engineering.

As the graphitization subject matter expert, this leader will drive technology selection, scale‑up, optimization, and process‑engineering deliverables across the full project lifecycle. Experience working within an EPC environment is strongly preferred.

Functional job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Process Engineering & Technical Leadership

  • Lead project execution related to the design, optimization, and scale‑up of graphitization processes.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for graphitization equipment selection, and technology evaluations.
  • Responsible for developing the Design Basis for graphitization units, including process descriptions, utilities, and performance criteria.
  • Lead creation of process flow diagrams (PFDs), heat & mass balances, utility balances, and preliminary equipment sizing.
  • Lead technology selection, vendor evaluations, and conceptual layouts.
  • Participate in feasibility studies, cost estimates, and risk assessments to support business development and proposals.
  • Work with other disciplines to design and develop solids handling design requirements.

Process Engineering Deliverables

  • Produce and/or approve detailed process engineering deliverables such as:
    • P&IDs
    • Material and energy balances
    • Equipment specifications & datasheets
    • Process control narratives
  • Ensure all process deliverables meet project schedule, quality requirements, and applicable codes and standards.

Safety, Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure all process designs and modifications comply with applicable safety standards and environmental regulations.
  • Support process hazard analyses (PHA), HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and risk assessments.
  • Commit to a culture of delivering products, services, and solutions that meet or exceed customers' needs and expectations

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • At least 15 years of experience, including experience in process engineering roles within EPC or large capital project environments.
  • Deep technical expertise in graphitization in a high temperature environment and carbon/graphite materials.
  • Knowledge of required metallurgy of listed processes.
  • Extensive experience producing and reviewing process engineering deliverables through FEL1–FEL3 and execution phases.
  • Proven ability to work across engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, controls, civil/structural) within an EPC environment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
