Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role:

Are you interested in building maps for commercial operations across large fleets of thousands of vehicles, paving the way for efficient route planning, safe transportation while maintaining compliance? Are you interested in joining a critical initiative in its kickoff phase? If so, Maps Services team might be the right place for you.

With its large customer base running Samsara gateways and Camera Monitors across hundreds of thousands of assets across multiple countries, Samsara is in a unique position to process trillions of data points relevant to mapping and traffic for commercial navigation.

As a Senior Software Engineer I, you will be instrumental in advancing Samsara's mission to connect the world's physical operations. In this role, you will design and implement cutting-edge infrastructure for creating layered map data framework, generating map tiles to be used for map matching, geocoding/reverse geocoding, routing and route optimization. Your work will directly enhance our telematics platform, delivering smarter and easier routing solutions that empower our customers to reduce costs, improve safety, and optimize fleet efficiency while at the same time enhancing driver and road safety. You will tackle complex problems, translate real-world logistical challenges into scalable software, and contribute to our mapping platform that unifies routing, safety and real-time telematics for deeper insights and proactive decision-making in diverse industries.

This is a remote position open to candidates based in the US and Canada. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: The software, firmware, and hardware you build will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You want to build for scale: With over 2.3 million IoT devices deployed to our global customers, you will work on a range of new and mature technologies driving scalable innovation for customers across industries driving the world's physical operations.

  • You are a team player: Working on our Samsara Engineering teams requires a mix of independent effort and collaboration. Motivated by our mission, we’re all racing toward our connected operations vision, and we intend to win—together.

In this role, you will:

  • Work with the product manager, routing & optimization and safety teams closely to design and build maps infrastructure, editor and pipelines.
  • Own the design and implementation of frontend and backend services that effortlessly scale no matter size of the fleet
  • Partner with the engineering manager and advocate for technical excellence on the team
  • Navigate tradeoffs between moving fast and building for the long term using customer impact as the north star
  • Act as a simplifier that ensures our solutions are built to serve our diverse customer base
  • Communicate your work to not just engineering audiences but also our internal product partners to maintain a tight feedback loop
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Work backwards from winning, Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

  • Fullstack or backend development experience
  • Strong programming/coding fundamentals
  • Experience designing and architecting large, high-scale systems.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage technical discussions.
  • An ability to estimate, communicate, and deliver upon project milestones with your team.
  • Demonstrated ability executing in ambiguous environments and delivering customer value

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Proven experience shaping and improving mapping, routing or navigation products
