ABOUT THE POSITION
We are seeking a Senior Software Quality Engineer who will lead quality strategy in an AI-augmented API engineering environment. This role goes beyond traditional test automation — you will define quality intelligence frameworks, validate AI-powered features, and embed continuous quality practices across the SDLC.
You will partner with Engineering, Product, Data, and TechOps teams to ensure our systems are reliable, scalable, observable, and responsible.
- Full-time W2 position, work core U.S. business hours in your time zone
- Work from your home office
- Company-provided MacBook, internet stipend, etc
- Must have the ability to fulfill the job requirements with or without reasonable accommodations
- Must be located in the United States and be legally eligible to work for us
- Travel is required for an all-company meeting, and may be required once or twice per year for team or project meetings
- We offer comprehensive medical, dental, and vision group health insurance, flexible spending accounts, and more
- We offer 21 days of flexible paid time off per year (increases with tenure) as well as your birthday and holidays (you may substitute any of the standard holidays for another public holiday such as bank/school or other regional or religious holidays)
- We offer a 401k match, professional development, charitable gift matching, robust wellness programs, and more
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Define and drive AI-driven API risk-based testing strategies across distributed systems.
- Establish quality gates within CI/CD pipelines.
- Perform API tests with GraphQL within Apollo Studio.
- Lead test architecture decisions for microservices and AI-integrated platforms.
- Leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate test creation and maintenance.
- Mentor and guide QA engineers on modern AI-driven quality engineering practices.
- Design self-healing and resilient automation frameworks.
- Validate AI-generated test artifacts for completeness and risk alignment.
- Leverage telemetry, logs, Honeycomb, and user behavior data to identify systemic risks and design synthetic monitoring and anomaly detection strategies.
- Track API error rates, latency, and SLA adherence.
- Build feedback loops between incidents and preventive improvements.
- Perform defect trend analysis and predictive risk modeling.
- Advocate for API design best practices, testability, observability, and reliability during architecture reviews and system design discussions.
- Embed AI-driven security and performance testing into the development lifecycle.
- Help build a culture where quality accelerates delivery.
- Research and evaluate emerging AI-powered testing tools and methodologies to enhance test generation, maintenance, and defect detection.
- Author pull requests for bug fixes where appropriate to help reduce developer cycle time and accelerate delivery.
- When needed, assist the web application testing team.
REQUIREMENTS
Self-management and time management are critical in this role. Without them, you will not be successful. Other requirements include:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred
- Experience designing and building AI-driven API test automation frameworks from the ground up.
- Hands-on experience with GraphQL API testing, including schema validation, query/mutation testing, and working within or alongside Apollo Studio
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, CircleCI)
- Mastery of AI-powered API testing tools and demonstrated ability to coach and share knowledge.
- Deep understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, and cloud-native architectures.
- Ability to read, debug, and write basic code — comfortable enough to analyze platform code, contribute to debugging conversations, and author straightforward PRs for fixes.
- Strong analytical and systems-thinking mindset.
- Strategic and data-driven decision making.
- Ethical and responsible AI awareness
- Experience with performance, security, and chaos testing.
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum teams using tools such as Jira and Confluence, or similar
- Experience with AI-driven UI test automation frameworks is a bonus
- Working knowledge of PHP/Laravel would be an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills — able to clearly explain technical issues to non-technical stakeholders and do so in a way that builds confidence rather than confusion (we live in Slack)
- A natural problem-solver who is energized by ambiguity and building something new, not someone who needs a well-worn path to follow
- Reliable, trustworthy, and consistent — the team will depend on you
- Easygoing, collaborative, and a genuine team player — must be able to comprehend highly advanced forms of sarcasm
- There is direct oversight, but you are expected to take ownership of your work, to establish deadlines, and to communicate progress proactively
- A home office, free of distractions, with a high-speed Internet connection
THE EVOLUTION OF THIS ROLE
This is not a traditional QA position focused solely on regression cycles. This role shifts from:
“Testing what was built.”
to
“Engineering quality into intelligent, evolving systems.”
TO APPLY
To apply, please submit a cover letter with your application. In your cover letter, we’d love to hear about: 1) why you would make a great addition to our team; and 2) a project achievement you are particularly proud of and why AND/OR something you’ve learned recently, etc.
