AthenaHealth epocratesTM is seeking an AI/ML Engineer to design, develop, and deploy advanced AI and ML solutions that enable our platform and mobile apps to transform the connection between pharmaceutical brands and 1million+ healthcare professionals during moment of care.  

As a multi-hat contributor, you bring a blend of Data Science, AI-Development Life Cycle engineering, and software engineering. Your primary responsibility will be implementing, deploying, and maintaining Machine Learning solutions for a mix of features across multiple product areas.  Experience building, deploying, and maintaining ML systems is required for classical AI models (examples: classifications, tagging, segmentation). Familiarity with Generative AI, Agentic AI, and the tooling to deploy these solutions in production software is highly desirable. 

The Team 

You will be part of the AI Capabilities engineering team. This team is entrusted with pushing the boundaries and building innovative AI / Machine Learning solutions in a growing and ever evolving space. This team also lays the foundation with the safety, privacy and performance guardrails and comes up with guidance for other teams to adopt the framework to build their own AI-enabled features. 

Key responsibilities 

  • Participate in development of end-to-end AI/ML projects—from research and design to deployment and ongoing maintenance—ensuring scalable, production-ready systems 

  • Help implement robust ML pipelines and production-grade infrastructure to support high-volume workloads 

  • Help prototype AI/ML algorithms and techniques to drive innovation. 

  • Monitor model performance, scalability, and cost in production, and drive continuous optimization 

  • Advocate for responsible AI—focusing on fairness, transparency, and data privacy 

Desired qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Computer Science/Engineering, or a related technical field. 

  • 1+ years in technology or software development, with experience in ML/AI and Data Science roles. 

  • Technical comprehension of Classical AI/ML algorithms, deep learning, Natural Language Understanding and Processing, Generative AI such as GPT and BERT, Large Language Model, LangChain and LangGraph. 

  • Proven track record developing and deploying scalable AI/ML systems and pipelines in production using AWS. 

  • Proficiency in Python and a working knowledge of JVM language/services. 

  • Proficiency in working with SQL and non-SQL data. 

  • Experience with at least one major ML framework (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) is preferred. 

  • Some experience taking models from prototype to production 

  • Familiarity with AWS SageMaker is a plus. 

  • Familiarity in MLOps and Machine Learning workflow orchestration is a plus. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 


Expected Compensation

$102,000 - $174,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
