Chewy is growing! We're looking for a Software Engineer III to help define and scale the frontend foundations that power consistent, accessible, and intuitive experiences for millions of pet parents.
As part of the UX Engineering team, you'll work at the intersection of engineering, design, accessibility, developer experience, and platform strategy. You'll help evolve the design system, component architecture, tooling, and engineering standards that enable teams across Chewy to build high-quality customer experiences faster and more consistently.
We're looking for engineers who think beyond individual features and screens-engineers who enjoy solving ambiguous technical problems, influencing engineering direction, and building systems that scale across teams and domains.

The base salary range for this role is $141,000 - $225,000.00.

What You'll Do
- Build and evolve reusable UI components, patterns, and design system foundations using React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript.
- Design scalable, accessible, and business-logic-agnostic component APIs that can be adopted across multiple teams, applications, and domains.
- Lead technical design discussions and influence architecture decisions related to component systems, theming, accessibility, performance, and developer experience.
- Partner closely with Product Design, Accessibility, and Front-End Platform teams to translate design systems into scalable engineering solutions.
- Drive design system adoption through documentation, tooling, migration guidance, and developer enablement.
- Improve shared frontend infrastructure, including Storybook, testing, accessibility validation, design token pipelines, and developer workflows.
- Apply AI-assisted engineering practices to improve productivity, documentation quality, accessibility review, migration support, and developer experience.
- Mentor engineers through code reviews, design reviews, architecture discussions, and technical coaching while helping raise frontend engineering standards across teams.
- Identify and solve ambiguous technical challenges, balancing short-term delivery needs with long-term platform scalability and maintainability.
What You'll Need
- 5+ years of experience building modern frontend applications, frontend platforms, shared UI libraries, or design systems.
- Strong expertise in React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, including modern component architecture patterns and browser behavior.
- Demonstrated experience building, maintaining, or scaling reusable component libraries or design systems used by multiple teams.
- Strong understanding of component API design, composition patterns, hooks, controlled and uncontrolled APIs, accessibility patterns, and developer ergonomics.
- Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing engineering decisions across teams.
- Hands-on experience with Storybook or similar tools for component development, documentation, testing, and collaboration.
- Deep understanding of web accessibility, including WCAG, semantic HTML, ARIA, keyboard navigation, focus management, screen readers, and accessibility testing.
- Experience working with design tokens, theming systems, and scalable frontend architecture patterns.
- Ability to independently define, decompose, and solve ambiguous technical problems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document technical decisions, tradeoffs, and engineering standards.
- Experience mentoring engineers and helping improve engineering practices across teams.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience building or scaling enterprise design systems supporting multiple products and engineering organizations.
- Experience with Style Dictionary, design token governance, token pipelines, and design token automation.
- Experience implementing multi-brand, multi-theme, or multi-platform frontend architectures.
- Experience with modern Storybook capabilities including interaction testing, accessibility testing, visual testing, composition, and CI workflows.
- Experience with Next.js, React Server Components, Server Actions, streaming, and modern frontend platform capabilities.
- Experience with monorepos, package publishing, build tooling, dependency management, codemods, linting rules, or automated migration tooling.
- Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools to improve developer experience, documentation, migration workflows, accessibility review, or platform adoption.
- Experience defining frontend standards, governance models, or platform strategy.
- Background in e-commerce, high-scale consumer applications, Agile environments, or cloud infrastructure supporting frontend platforms and developer tooling.
The base salary range for this role is $141,000 - $225,000.00.
- The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.
