About VALIS

We’re a fast-moving, rapidly growing B2B SaaS company focused on bringing modern technology to the metal recycling industry — an essential but underserved market segment. Our technology helps recyclers close more deals, operate more efficiently, and finally ditch the pen-and-paper workflows.

We’re an early-stage company, backed by leading climate-tech VCs, looking to bring on new team members that can help us build VALIS and transform the industry. We lead with authenticity, boldness, passion, and empathy focused on creating a more sustainable future. A career at VALIS is one where you’ll be empowered to expand your technical and leadership abilities while having a positive impact on the world.

The role

As a Software Engineer at VALIS, you'll build and scale our newest product line, taking it from a blank page to the plant floor. You'll spend time with operators and plant managers, design the schema and application, and deliver a product that scrap processors rely on to run their plant. Working directly with our CTO, product team, and end users, you'll make the architecture and design decisions, prioritize what gets built when, and see your work used every shift, every day. We're hiring across mid-senior levels, from a few years experience to senior engineers.

What you'll do
  • Own the product end-to-end: data model, API, UI, UX, deployment, and iteration.
  • Design a multi-tenant domain model (materials, loads, runs, equipment, quality) that holds up as each customer's process differs.
  • Build fast, robust, validated data-entry workflows for the plant floor.
  • Deliver insights dashboards managers act on each shift.
  • Meet with operators and facility managers weekly, get on-site, and turn what you see into product decisions.
  • Integrate new data sources with existing VALIS data and customer systems such as ERP exports, scales, and plant controls.
  • Build and deploy agentic features to surface trends from production and quality data, flag anomalies, and notify the right people.
How we work
  • Remote, US-based. Work from anywhere in the US, overlapping with East Coast business hours (roughly 9am to 5pm ET).
  • Small team, low overhead. You'll work directly with our CTO, along with a product and business team with deep industry experience.
  • Our stack: React and TypeScript on the frontend; C# and ASP.NET Core with PostgreSQL on the backend; AWS, Docker, and Pulumi for infrastructure.
  • We use Claude Code heavily and expect you to be highly effective with it. You should own and understand the code you ship; AI speeds up the work but does not replace the thinking.
  • Travel a few times a year for customer site visits and company get-togethers (on-site at our HQ in Worcester, MA or off-site elsewhere).

RequirementsWho you are

We hire for fundamentals & mindset. You:

  • Have 3+ years of professional software engineering experience (for senior candidates, 5+ and have led technical projects).
  • Think data model first: you can turn a messy real-world process into a clean, normalized schema... and defend the tradeoff decisions.
  • Use types, clear boundaries, and domain language to make wrong states hard to represent.
  • Are comfortable owning ambiguous problems end to end, finding solutions without waiting for instruction.
  • Are solid across databases, backend APIs, and frontend fundamentals.
  • Are mathematically minded, with strong quantitative and statistical fundamentals, so the numbers we show customers are ones they can trust.
  • Move fast, cut scope wisely, and don't shy away from talking to customers.
  • Write and communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical team members (we're a remote team).

It won't be a good fit if you want a big team to lean on, a slow/low-risk release process, or narrow-scoped work.

If this role really excites you, but you don't check all the boxes, apply anyway!

Bonus points
  • Familiarity with our stack (React, TypeScript, C#/.NET, PostgreSQL, AWS).
  • You've worked in metals or materials recycling (or another heavy industry) and understand the people who run those operations.
  • You've built ERP, MES, inventory, logistics, or other operations software where data-entry correctness matters.
  • You've built multi-tenant B2B SaaS where each customer's workflow is a little different.
  • Experience with plant or device data: scales, PLCs, SCADA, MQTT, or ERP integrations.

Benefits
  • Base salary: $125,000 to $155,000, depending on experience level
  • Meaningful equity through our employee stock option plan
  • 401(k) with employer matc
  • Medical, dental, and vision insuranc
  • Unlimited vacation, plus: sick time, guaranteed personal time, and public holiday

You must be authorized to work in the US full-time. We can't sponsor visas at this time.

Our hiring processApplication form

Say hi to our office dog in your application (include her name). It's on the About Us page of our website.

Steps
  1. Intro call (15-30 min)
  2. Technical deep dive (30-60 min) on something you built from scratch
  3. Live design exercise (60-90 min): e.g., model a real recycling-floor workflow with us
  4. Team and founder conversations
  5. References, background check, and offer

We aim to move from first call to offer in about 2-3 weeks.
