Job Description
FORTNA is seeking a Sr Controls Engineer to drive the design, functionality, and testing of upper‑level automated sortation systems. This role leads and supports controls design and programming for new projects, troubleshoots complex issues across controls hardware and software, and provides leadership and mentoring to junior engineers to ensure successful project delivery and adherence to approved design and customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive design, functionality, and testing of upper‑level automated sortation systems
- Lead and assist in the design and programming of new projects
- Write and implement modular and reusable PLC code and support on‑site controls engineering tasks
- Design and develop HMI solutions using platforms such as Ignition, Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, or FactoryTalk Optix
- Implement and commission PLC and HMI programs to satisfy approved design and customer specifications
- Diagnose and resolve controls issues involving I/O, hardware (controller setup, VFDs, communications devices), and software (PLC and HMI feedback) using electrical troubleshooting best practices
- Provide leadership, guidance, and mentoring to junior level engineers
- Work with FORTNA employees, customer representatives, and third‑party vendors to ensure all aspects of a project are considered during design and execution
- Review electrical designs and support accurate as‑built documentation for approval
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to lead controls design/programming activities for automated systems
- Advanced troubleshooting capability across I/O, controller hardware (setup/VFDs/comms), and PLC/HMI software feedback
- Experience developing modular/reusable PLC code
- Experience developing HMI solutions using Ignition / Wonderware / FactoryTalk View / FactoryTalk Optix
- Ability to provide mentoring/technical guidance to junior engineers
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience driving controls functionality and testing for automated sortation systems
- Experience reviewing electrical designs and supporting as‑built documentation packages
- Experience collaborating directly with customers and third‑party vendors in project delivery environments
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Ability to work safely in active construction and operational warehouse environments
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate around automated equipment
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required
