We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a talented and passionate Senior Software Engineer – Java Backend to join our engineering team. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services that power PayPal's core financial platform. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including product, architecture, and QA to deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable solutions.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
  • Advises immediate management on project-level issues
  • Guides junior engineers
  • Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
  • Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy high-quality Java-based backend services and APIs

  • Architect scalable microservices solutions using industry best practices

  • Participate in system design discussions, code reviews, and technical planning sessions

  • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions

  • Drive improvements in application performance, reliability, and scalability

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, including root cause analysis and prevention

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of technical excellence

  • Ensure adherence to security standards and compliance requirements in a financial services environment

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline improvements and DevOps practices

  • Write and maintain technical documentation

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • 5–8 years of professional software development experience

  • Strong proficiency in Java (Java 8/11/17+), including core concepts such as concurrency, JVM tuning, and design patterns

  • Hands-on experience with Spring Boot / Spring Framework

  • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and microservices

  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ), and caching strategies (e.g., Redis, Memcached)

  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MongoDB)

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure

  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a focus on writing clean, maintainable code

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the payments, fintech, or financial services domain

  • Familiarity with gRPC or other RPC frameworks

  • Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, or other security/authentication frameworks

  • Experience with observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus)

  • Prior experience working in a large-scale, high-availability distributed environment

  • Understanding of PCI-DSS or other financial compliance frameworks

The base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring. The expected range of pay for this role by location is:
