Job Title:                    Staff Accountant

Department:               Finance

Reports to:                 Controller

Status:                        Regular, full-time, exempt from overtime

 

The Houston Symphony is seeking applicants for an entry-level Staff Accountant position. The Staff Accountant works under the guidance of the Controller and in collaboration with the Finance team. This position offers the opportunity to build broad practical expertise in a variety of accounting functions, take  ownership of assigned processes, and support organizational strategic initiatives. Sound judgment, discretion, and appropriate handling of confidential financial information is required.
 

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

  Revenue, Cash, & Accounts Receivable:

  • Review and post daily revenue subledger to general ledger
  • Maintain A/R records, including payment reconciliation, and follow-up
  • Complete daily check deposits and reconcile cash activity to the general ledger

 Payroll & General Accounting

  • Process bi-weekly payroll timely and accurately, obtain approvals, and complete reconciliations
  • Prepare assigned GL account reconciliations and resolve reconciling items
  • Prepare journal entries and related supporting documentation
  • Coordinate with Accounts Payable to ensure accurate and timely subledger posting

Contribute to a culture of collaboration and support within the Houston Symphony

  • Maintain effective working relationships with management and across departments
  • Complete special projects (e.g. audit & tax prep, instrument insurance management) and provide backup support as needed
  • Research issues, document, and communicate findings appropriately
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Qualifications

•  Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field with substantial accounting coursework. Candidates with degrees in Finance, Business, or other related disciplines should have completed upper-level accounting coursework and/or display relevant accounting knowledge.

•  Working knowledge of accounting principles and ability to apply them to entry-level accounting responsibilities.

•  Proficient in Microsoft Excel and comfortable using Microsoft 365 applications in a professional environment.

•  Additional technology skills, including data analysis or process automation, are a plus.

•  Organized and dependable, with the ability to manage assigned work, meet deadlines, solve routine problems, and ask questions when needed.

•  Collaborative and able to communicate effectively with Finance staff, management, and other departments.


Physical Demands:

This position primarily involves computer-based office work, with occasional movement of office equipment, supplies, or records up to 30 lbs.
