Transforming the Insurance Industry is ambitious, we know. That's why at Applied, we're building a team that shows up every day ready to learn, willing to try new things, and driven to deliver innovative software and services that make us indispensable to our customers, all within a culture built on values that make us indispensable to each other too. With 40+ years of experience in Insurtech, we're not just redefining what's achievable, we're creating a place where amazing career moments are made possible.
Position Overview
As a Staff DevOps Engineer, you'll work across teams to tackle complex problems, drive platform improvements, and shape the way we deliver software at scale. Your impact goes well beyond your own output: you'll mentor engineers, design systems that raise the bar on quality and security and influence how the broader engineering organization thinks about DevOps. If you thrive on solving hard problems, communicating across technical and non-technical stakeholders, and moving the needle on things that matter to customers, this is where you belong.
What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and deliver solutions that improve scalability, quality, security, and velocity across multiple engineering teams.
  • Address escalated and complex debugging issues, identifying root causes from a broad perspective to reduce the risk of future incidents.
  • Introduce automation solutions and provide guidance to help multiple teams adopt new tools and processes.
  • Partner with DevOps leadership to prioritize new initiatives, including upgrades and investments in new tooling over time.
  • Design monitoring strategies and create documentation to help DevOps and other engineering teams troubleshoot independently.
  • Extend team knowledge by sharing best practices, clarifying standards, and explaining how to adapt approaches across different environments.
  • Mentor engineers, including senior-level engineers, across multiple teams to support growth and delivery quality.
  • Explore new tools and propose initiatives based on current and emerging platform needs.
  • Explain complex technical concepts clearly to a range of technical and non-technical stakeholders.

We're Excited to Learn More About You
Your experience may include:
  • 10+ years of experience in DevOps Engineering or a closely related area.
  • Expert knowledge of software engineering principles and practices, with extensive experience developing and enhancing technical designs, testing practices, and security at scale.
  • Experience designing automation solutions and developing guides for team-wide adoption.
  • Expert knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and relevant tools or frameworks for interacting with public cloud platforms.
  • Track record of success leading technical initiatives to identify and address root causes of issues.
  • Ability to design and present new solutions with well-reasoned arguments and genuine openness to alternative approaches.
  • Experience engaging cross-functional stakeholders to solve complex, multi-team problems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.

You may have other skills or credentials, including:
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and driving engineering standards across teams.
  • Familiarity with multi-cloud environments and cloud-native architecture patterns.
  • Experience contributing to multi-year platform planning or roadmap discussions.

We know that talent comes from all backgrounds and experience levels. We encourage military members and their spouses as well as candidates without a degree or a background in tech to apply!
