We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.

Job Summary:

At PayPal, Staff iOS Software Engineers are visionary technical leaders driving the evolution of our mobile platform. You’ll define and execute the iOS technology roadmap, architect scalable systems that power millions of secure transactions daily, and deliver world-class mobile experiences that delight customers and fuel business growth. In this role, you’ll lead high-performing teams, mentor senior engineers, and foster a culture of innovation, experimentation, and technical excellence. Collaborating closely with product and engineering leadership, you’ll shape mobile architecture and strategy to keep PayPal at the forefront of mobile innovation.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system

  • Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow

  • Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives

  • Proactively improves existing structures & processes

  • Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems

  • Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions

  • Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor

  • Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations

Expected Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications:

    • Deep expertise in iOS development, with advanced proficiency in Swift and Objective-C and a strong understanding of Cocoa frameworks and Xcode.

    • Proven experience designing, developing, and delivering large-scale mobile applications and reusable software libraries with focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

    • Strong knowledge of mobile architecture, design patterns, and object-oriented programming principles, including best practices in coding, testing, and code review.

    • Experience integrating and managing SQL/NoSQL databases and using ORM frameworks such as Hibernate or JPA.

    • Demonstrated ability to architect complex systems and deliver high-quality software that meets performance, security, and scalability goals.

    • Deep understanding of iOS platform technologies, trade-offs, and emerging design patterns.

    • Recognized for driving technical excellence, influencing cross-functional engineering initiatives, and mentoring other engineers.

    • Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to translate technical vision into actionable outcomes across teams.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with mobile payment technologies and integrations at scale.

    • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins), application monitoring tools (Crashlytics, Fabric), and automated testing frameworks (Appium, Cucumber).

    • Proficiency in cross-platform frameworks such as React Native, and exposure to Android development.

    • Expertise in mobile performance optimization, machine learning, or AI integration for mobile applications.

    • Awareness of emerging mobile technologies including AR, VR, and wearables.

    • Recognized for inspiring and mentoring teams, fostering innovation, and shaping mobile engineering standards across the organization.

    The base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring. The expected range of pay for this role by location is:

    Primary Location | Pay Range:

    San Jose, California | ($143,500 - $262,350 Salary)

    Additional Location(s) | Pay Range:

    Austin,Texas | ($130,500 - $238,700 Salary)

    Additional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
