Every developer has a tab open on Stack Overflow.

We are one of the most popular websites in the world - a community-based space focused on increasing productivity, decreasing cycle times, accelerating time to market, and protecting institutional knowledge.

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We embrace collaboration, transparency, and believe in leading with empathy; creating an environment where every Stacker knows they belong. We embrace that the unique contributions and points of view of all Stackers contribute to our success.

We are a Best Company to Work For, in addition to being recognized for Best Company Leadership, Best Company Happiness, Best Company Perks and Benefits, Best Company Work-Life Balance, Best Company Compensation, and Best Company Outlook.

We are a remote-first company with Hiring HUBs based in the US, Canada, UK, and Germany.

At Stack Overflow, our mission is to serve developers by building products that make millions of developers’ lives better every day. As a product designer at Stack Overflow, you’ll create and build products that directly impact the work and the lives of those developers.

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our User Experience team. Our team is a small group made of Product Designers and Researchers. In this particular role, you’ll work on our community products, which include Stack Overflow and the Stack Exchange network. Stack Overflow today has over 17 million question and answer pairs, sees 50 million unique visitors a month, and has been visited over 12 billion times in the past decade. You’ll be designing for one of the largest, most engaging products on the internet. While we’re proud of how far we’ve come, we need your help to make Stack Overflow an attractive community for the next 10 million developers.

You’ll also be spending lots of time working with all our other product designers, whether that’s contributing to our design system, participating in critique, or just hanging out with us in Slack. We’re a team that rejects competition between designers and instead embraces collaboration and is always looking for ways to teach and help each other.

We’re looking for a generalist—someone who is familiar with research to early-stage design explorations to high-fidelity mockups and front-end development. But most importantly, we’re looking for someone who’s excited to join our small team, to dig into big projects, and to learn and grow with us.

We're looking for a generalist who is comfortable with the full design process – from research and early-stage explorations to high-fidelity mockups and even basic front-end development. Most importantly, we're looking for someone excited to dig into big projects and help define a new product.

What you’ll do:
  • Drive design for bringing Stack Overflow directly to developers: Follow a fast-moving product development process in close collaboration with your product team, consisting of engineers and a Product Manager.
  • Conduct user-centered design: Identify when user research and experience design methods are necessary, and conduct or collaborate on that discovery work to gather insights.
  • Translate insights into solutions: Partner closely with our research team, drawing insights from their work and turning findings into tangible design solutions.
  • Craft high-quality experiences: Design high-quality visuals, interactions, workflows, and copy that are user-centered and consistent with our design language.
  • Influence product strategy: Use your design work to appropriately impact and drive product strategy within the context of Community Product’s overall product and business goals.
  • Collaborate and deliver: Work with product managers and engineers to deliver your product vision, including writing design specs and reviewing work before it is shipped to users.
  • Foster a collaborative environment: Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team environment where design ideas and feedback are shared openly and with the best intentions.
What we need to see:
  • 5-8 years of product design experience, with a strong portfolio showcasing thoughtful and thorough design work in a responsive web setting.
  • Applied experience with usability testing, metric definition, A/B tests, interviewing, and other common forms of early-stage product testing and discovery.
  • A deep curiosity and ability to consider product strategy and vision. You don’t just care about how a feature should look, but you’re interested in why we’re designing it in the first place.
  • Experience in conducting, digesting, and applying user research.
  • Experience with basic front-end development (HTML, CSS) or vibe-coding.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable pieces or compelling narratives.
  • High levels of organization and ability to work independently, particularly in a fast-paced, new product environment.
  • Robust and adaptive collaboration skills, with the ability to navigate conflicting needs and orient outcomes that work for a broad range of stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working on a consumer facing product
  • Experience working on data products and/or AI-driven solutions
  • Experience with designing for developers or other technical audience
  • An understanding of Stack Overflow, other  Stack Exchange network sites, and Stack Overflow for Teams
Also note:
  • We’re a distributed, remote team, and you’ll be part of a work culture that emphasizes online & asynchronous communication with minimal meetings and ceremonies.
  • We’re generally very flexible about working hours, though we ask everyone on the team to maintain an overlap with (at least) 10 AM—1 PM US Eastern time.

What you’ll get in return:

  • Competitive Base Salary
  • Generous paid vacation
  • Generous parental leave (16 weeks at 100% pay), family care leave, and unlimited sick days
  • Equity for all employees at all levels
  • Industry-leading health benefits that are applicable per country of residence for all our full-time employees
  • Company-paid Life Insurance
  • Home Internet stipend
  • Professional allocation for your growth and development
  • One-time allowance to assist with your home office setup
  • Company-paid access to Calm, Bravely, LinkedIn Learning, MyAcademy and Overdrive
