Who we are
At Fortis Games we aspire to make great games that bring people together while redefining how game companies work. We believe in building a sense of belonging through our games, their communities, and how we operate and treat each other. Through our game communities, we will create powerful connections and lasting memories. We will foster a culture of diversity, equity and belonging where together our diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds impact the games we make.
We are an early but mighty organization with a leadership team of game industry veterans. There are many opportunities for you to have a big impact on the products we'll be making as well as the overall direction of the company. If you're passionate about tackling difficult problems with direct and thoughtful communication and team first mentality, we may be the right place for you.

About the role

As Technical Director, you will be the engineering leader for one of our mobile-first free-to-play live service games. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic oversight, ensuring your game team delivers high-quality experiences that players love while building systems that scale sustainably.

Reporting to the Executive Producer, you'll be accountable for all engineering aspects of your game — from architecture decisions and code quality standards to team development and cross-functional collaboration. You'll set the technical vision, foster a culture of engineering excellence, and serve as the connective tissue between your engineering team and the broader studio.

Success in this role means shipping and operating a commercially successful game with a technical foundation built for long-term live operations, while developing a high-performing engineering team that operates with autonomy, speed, and craft excellence.

What you’ll achieve

  • Lead and develop your game's engineering team, mentoring engineers across experience levels and building a culture of ownership and accountability that enables autonomous, high-performing execution.
  • Own the technical architecture and strategy for your game — making build vs. buy decisions, establishing system designs that balance immediate delivery with long-term scalability, and keeping the codebase maintainable through years of live operations.
  • Champion engineering workflows that prioritize speed and reliability. From feature development and testing to deployment and live service integration, ensure your team can iterate rapidly, validate quickly, and ship with confidence.
  • Partner proactively across disciplines (Product, Design, Art, Data, QA) to remove blockers and ensure engineering is a solutions-oriented partner throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Establish and uphold best practices for code quality, mobile performance, observability, and technical documentation that keeps your game running smoothly at scale.
  • Leverage shared technology and central platform tools effectively, integrating common frameworks to accelerate delivery while contributing feedback to improve shared systems across the portfolio.
  • Manage engineering resource allocation, making data-informed decisions to balance feature delivery, technical debt, and live operations while maintaining team sustainability.
  • Represent engineering in game leadership forums, communicating technical strategy clearly to non-technical stakeholders and ensuring engineering considerations shape product decisions early.

What you’ll need to be successful

  • Proven experience as a Technical Director or equivalent, shipping and operating mobile free-to-play or live service titles with deep understanding of the full development lifecycle.
  • Strong technical credibility in Unity and mobile game development, with the ability to make sound architectural decisions, review code meaningfully, and mentor engineers effectively.
  • Track record of building high-performing engineering teams in fast-paced, ambiguous environments — developing talent, fostering collaboration, and maintaining high standards.
  • Experience as a cross-functional partner who can translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders, influence without authority, and align engineering with business goals.
  • Fluency with the free-to-play business model and designing systems that support monetization, live operations, and data-driven iteration.
  • Passion for solving problems from first principles and finding innovative solutions rather than defaulting to convention.
  • Clear, direct communicator who builds trust across a globally distributed, remote-first team spanning multiple time zones.
  • Self-directed ownership mentality — you identify what needs to happen and drive it forward while keeping stakeholders aligned.

Why join us
There are many reasons to join us, but here are a few:

  • We strongly believe we are changing how games studios operate and at the core of what we do is making great games that create a connected community
  • We're not just about making Games Where You Belong. We're also about building communities where our people belong. That's why Fortis is a thriving environment that celebrates diversity, embraces inclusivity, and fosters growth.
  • Build and grow with a seasoned team of accomplished talent who have left an impactful mark in their disciplines, both in and out of gaming
