About the company

Our client is an industrial automation company.

The role

Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Turn standardized retrofit hardware into working installations on heavy vehicles, tailoring each build to the machine in front of you. The work splits between the workshop and customer sites, with a focus on diagnosing problems that span electrical, mechanical and software layers and passing findings back to engineering.

What you'll do

- Tailor a standard set of electrical and computing hardware so it fits each different machine model.

- Assemble and fit cabling, connectors, brackets, sensing devices and moving components onto vehicles.

- Validate each installation through electrical continuity, voltage, power and vehicle network checks.

- Visit customer locations to assess retrofit needs, then carry out installation, commissioning, debugging and acceptance testing.

- Diagnose integration faults across electrical, mechanical and software layers, and raise clear change requests with engineering teams.

- Capture build problems and lessons learned so that future installations are smoother and more repeatable.

Requirements

What we're looking for

- At least 4 years of hands-on experience in a vehicle, robotics or heavy equipment environment.

- A bachelor's degree.

- A background in designing physical components for large machinery.

- Experience retrofitting machines or vehicles that are already in service.

- Experience fitting hardware and structural mounts onto vehicles or equipment.

- Working knowledge of vehicle network wiring and automotive-style electrical systems.

- Practical skill in cable assembly, terminations and fault-finding.

- Comfort using electrical test instruments, bench power sources and general workshop tools.

- Willingness to work a hybrid schedule and travel to customer sites up to 25% of the time.

Bonus points

- Prior work at a company in the automotive, self-driving or robotics space.

- Exposure to controller programming or low-level embedded software.

Benefits

Compensation and benefits

- Base salary: USD 100,000 to 170,000 per year

Location and work model

- Austin, Texas, United States (London, United Kingdom is also possible)

- Hybrid, with about 25% travel to customer sites

- Full-time

What you need to know about the Austin Tech Scene

Austin has a diverse and thriving tech ecosystem thanks to home-grown companies like Dell and major campuses for IBM, AMD and Apple. The state’s flagship university, the University of Texas at Austin, is known for its engineering school, and the city is known for its annual South by Southwest tech and media conference. Austin’s tech scene spans many verticals, but it’s particularly known for hardware, including semiconductors, as well as AI, biotechnology and cloud computing. And its food and music scene, low taxes and favorable climate has made the city a destination for tech workers from across the country.

Key Facts About Austin Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 180,500; 13.7% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Dell, IBM, AMD, Apple, Alphabet
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, hardware, cloud computing, software, healthtech
  • Funding Landscape: $4.5 billion in VC funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Live Oak Ventures, Austin Ventures, Hinge Capital, Gigafund, KdT Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, Silverton Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Texas, Southwestern University, Texas State University, Center for Complex Quantum Systems, Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, Texas Advanced Computing Center
