Position Overview:

The Vice President, Development is responsible for the advancement and successful execution of a multi-hundred-megawatt portfolio of energy projects including Solar+Storage, Standalone BESS, Microgrids, and CHP assets from initial evaluation through financial close and Notice-to-Proceed (NTP).

Reporting directly to the Chief Delivery Officer, the VP will mentor and guide a high-performing development team and accelerate project development while ensuring bankability. The VP will drive rapid advancement through due diligence, risk mitigation, and stakeholder alignment, delivering projects that meet rigorous standards for execution and third-party financing.

The role blends technical acumen, commercial insight, strategic decision-making, cross-functional leadership, and risk governance to deliver cutting edge projects that set industry standards. Projects are primarily large Behind-The-Meter (BTM) systems serving high-load, high-reliability customers such as data centers and manufacturing facilities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Development Leadership

  • Lead and mentor an experienced development team to advance key projects through critical gate reviews, financial close, and Notice-to-Proceed (NTP).
  • Align development execution with organizational goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Co-author Investment Committee submissions in partnership with commercial leadership to drive executive decision-making on capital deployment.
  • Facilitate effective transition from development to EPC execution and institute governance frameworks for these handoffs.
  • Assess strategic opportunities including joint development partnerships, new client relationships, and key internal workflow optimizations.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on design coordination with engineering, including equipment selection and site layout development.
  • Govern interconnection queues, permitting pathways and technical due diligence; track timelines and cost-at-risk impacts.
  • Oversee development spending across the portfolio, ensuring that all Devex decisions are informed by risk assessments, contractual obligations, and alignment with organizational strategy.

Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting

  • Manage existing and cultivate new key client partnerships with organizations such as Fortune 100s, Data Center, and major Manufacturing clients.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with regulatory bodies, utilities to optimize queue positions and project outcomes.
  • Represent Calibrant in high-stakes forums such as client boardrooms and public engagements.
  • Empower the development team to manage day-to-day client relationships, while providing executive oversight and a support system for escalations and urgent matters.
  • Ensure organized, robust project documentation and timely status updates to internal and external stakeholders (lenders, financiers, Independent Engineers), supporting due diligence and funding requirements.
  • Oversee maintenance of project records in development tracking systems and lead regular project update meetings to drive accountability, transparency, and progress.

Risk Management and Continuous Improvement

  • Institute proactive risk monitoring and deploy mitigation strategies that protect equity value and project viability across their lifecycles.
  • Lead retrospective analysis to optimize best practices and improve future project lifecycles
  • Champion adoption of cutting-edge standards such as digital workflows and analytics to compress project lifecycles and improve overall portfolio performance.

Requirements
  • 15 years of experience in energy project development and leadership, with a proven track record of enabling project development teams to deliver successful and bankable Behind the Meter (BTM) projects and porftolios.
  • Direct experience in diverse technology stacks such as Solar, Battery Storage, Microgrids and CHP.
  • Clear track record of leading key late-stage development activities and guiding multiple projects to NTP.
  • Executive presence with experience managing cross-functional project teams.
  • Proven experience managing key client relationships such as Fortune 100 customers and Data Centers.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills; proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to interface confidently with internal stakeholders, customers, regulators, and financiers.
  • Understanding of financial modeling and project economics; ability to support Investment Committee processes with data, assumptions, and insights.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, or related discipline; MBA or further education a plus.
