Vice President of Operations

The Vice President of Operations partners with the CEO to drive organizational strategy, infrastructure, and team development in alignment with the mission, vision, and strategic plan. They will be responsible for the organization's human resources, facilities, technology, finance, and operations. They manage through trust, lead with empathy, and set clear expectations while holding the team to a high standard. They communicate directly and honestly, navigate conflict with confidence, and create the conditions for staff to do their best work. They bring strong project management discipline and the ability to work independently while remaining deeply collaborative across departments. 

The VP of Operations will work with the CEO to foster a collaborative, supportive, and outcomes-driven team culture. They will serve as a member of the leadership team and will be a thought partner to the CEO, helping shape the organization’s strategic plan and future vision. 

This position is full-time and based in Austin, Texas.

Responsibilities:

Executive Leadership and Strategy:

• Partners with the CEO to drive organization development, including analyzing and implementing priorities, partnerships, and infrastructure needs in line with the organization’s strategic plan.
• Serves as a senior-level thought partner, mentor, and bridge builder for the entire organization.
• Regularly tracks the progress of the strategic plan and ensures the team is on track with goals.
• Regularly engages with the Board of Directors and senior leadership on organizational performance and opportunities.
• Responsible for the organization’s team building and professional development.

People Operations and Team Leadership:

• Responsible for day-to-day HR operations, including hiring coordination, onboarding, offboarding, employee records, benefits administration, and compliance with employment law.
• Administers the organization’s performance management, including regular performance check-ins, manager support, and annual evaluations.
• Responds to staff questions and concerns; escalates complex employee relations matters to the CEO.
• Ensures compliance with organizational and departmental policies and processes.
• Manages the organization’s benefits, including retirement fund, health insurance, stipends, PTO, and other benefit programs.
• Regularly analyzes compensation and benefits trends to ensure Texans Care for Children is competitive in the marketplace.
• Works closely with leadership and employees to improve work relationships, strengthen morale, and increase productivity and retention, ensuring Texans Care for Children remains a great place to work and grow professionally.

Organizational Operations:

• Builds and maintains the organizational infrastructure to support the organization’s mission, including staffing, facilities, technology, and systems.
• Oversees facilities management, including leases, office operations, and vendor relationships. 
• Serves as the main point of contact for technology, administers cloud-based email and file system, phone system, and conferencing equipment, and coordinates with external IT vendors as needed.

Finance and Stewardship:

• Directly supervises the Director of Finance and Administration, setting clear priorities, providing coaching, and supporting their professional growth.
• In conjunction with the CEO and Director of Finance and Administration, develops, implements and tracks the board-approved organizational budget, including monitoring specific budgets for special events, grant fiscal requirements, and special projects.
• Leads contracts administration — drafting, reviewing, executing, and tracking vendor, partner, and program contracts.
• In conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration, reviews audit materials, supports the audit process, and the filing of the agency’s Form 990. 
• Provides regular financial reports to the Board President, Treasurer, and at full Board Meetings.
• Ensures internal controls are maintained, and documents are retained per financial policies.
• Partners with the Director of Finance and Administration to manage payroll and related benefits.

• Bachelor's degree with a focus on business, finance, accounting, or other relevant fields.
• Minimum of twelve years of experience in operations and related fields, with fifteen or more years preferred, including substantial experience building and managing high-performing teams.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing finance, HR, and operations.
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, audits, and compliance requirements.
• Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects with initiative.
• Experience working alongside people of various viewpoints and backgrounds.
• Commitment to the mission of Texans Care for Children, including a passion for using public policy to improve the well-being of Texas children and families.

Salary from $140,000+, commensurate with experience. Additionally, Texans Care for Children offers excellent benefits to full-time employees, including:
