Job Description:

More About Cotality

We are not just a real estate tech company; we are an AI-Native enterprise. We use our scale and connectivity to unlock new possibilities for the property industry.

Cotality XD: Revolutionizing the Practice

The Experience Design (XD) team at Cotality is responsible for every part of how a user interacts with our services. We don't just "make things pretty." We use a User-Centered Design and Development (UCD+D) strategy to solve the right challenges for our users. We call this Building the Right Thing.

In our world, Engineering and XD are deeply integrated. We are moving beyond traditional workflows to an AI-Native model. This means we build experiences for both human users and non-human users (AI agents). We value honesty, humility, and empathy. We like to laugh, but we always get the work done.

The Role: Leading the AI-Native Design System

We are looking for a Director of Software Engineering to lead our state-of-the-art Design System. This is not a standard library of buttons and colors. This is a foundational shift in how we generate and maintain code and design using AI.

You will lead a team of designers and engineers to create user-centered solutions that push the boundaries of our industry. You will be a mentor, an educator, and a storyteller. Your primary goal is to ensure our design system is scalable, secure, and ready for an AI-first future. You will work closely with leaders in product and technology to make sure our teams have what they need to succeed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design System Ownership: Lead the engineering strategy for our multi-platform design system. Ensure it is scalable, accessible (WCAG 2.1+), and seamlessly integrated into both design tools (Figma) and developer codebases.

  • AI-Native Transformation: Architect workflows that leverage LLMs and Generative AI for automated code generation, design-to-code translations, and automated documentation.

  • Developer Experience (DX) Evangelism: Identify friction in the local development environment and CI/CD pipelines. Build tools that make it "impossible" for engineers to build off-brand or inaccessible components.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner with Design Directors to align on "Design Tokens" and visual language, while collaborating with Product Engineering to ensure high adoption rates of the system.

  • Team Mentorship: Scale a specialized team of Front-end and Full-stack engineers who are passionate about UI architecture, tooling, and internal infrastructure.

Job Qualifications:

  • Strategic Leadership: 10+ years of engineering experience with 4+ years leading Design Systems, UI Engineering, or Developer Tooling teams.

  • AI-Native Vision: Proven ability to move beyond "copilots" toward building autonomous agents that maintain code quality, consistency, and brand standards.

  • The Design-Engineering Bridge: Fluency in both design language (auto-layout, typography) and engineering constraints (latency, API design, tree-shaking).

  • Agentic Workflows: Expertise in creating "self-healing" codebases where AI agents scan PRs, update deprecated tokens, and resolve production incidents.

  • Advanced AI Implementation: Mastery of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to ground LLMs in specific brand guidelines and prevent "hallucinations."

  • Automated Design-to-Code: Experience building "Visual AI" agents that turn Figma URLs into production-ready, accessible components.

  • Programmatic Prompting: Proven track record of building prompt chains and templates for consistent, high-quality UI generation at scale.

  • Modern Frontend Stack: Expert-level React/Vue and Web Components, paired with mastery of repos and modern CI/CD (GitHub Actions).

  • AI-Enhanced Tooling: Experience developing custom VS Code extensions and "Chat-with-your-Design-System" interfaces for developers.

  • Synthetic Data & Testing: Ability to use AI to generate edge-case UI data for robust visual regression and stress testing.

  • Automated Documentation: Implementation of AI pipelines that keep Storybook and usage guidelines in 100% sync with code changes.

  • Operational Management: Skill in managing budgets for internal tools, setting roadmaps for engineers, and supporting international teams.

  • Quality & Compliance: Deep knowledge of AI security, IP ownership, and "human-in-the-loop" workflows to ensure accessibility and performance.

  • Cloud & Scale: Ability to modernize legacy applications into cloud-native architectures built for maximum availability.

  • Cultural Leadership: A mentor-first approach that values simplicity, feedback, and urgency balanced with empathy.

  • Education: Degree in Computer Science, HCI, or show high-level practical experience.
