Austin vibes: Inside the unique offices of 4 local tech companies

One has a fully stocked, handmade bar and sits out of Austin’s hippest neighborhood. Another is laid out across five craftsman-style homes off W. 6th Street and welcomes pets of all stripes — including ducks and hedgehogs.

No, we aren’t talking about Austin’s newest watering holes or yoga studios. We’re talking tech offices.

A proud resident of the 78702 zip code, Sumo’s east side headquarters includes everything from an onsite gym to a secret lounge. Local architecture firm Runa Workshop designed the space alongside Taylor Murphy Design Studio to pay tribute to the framework behind website development and app analytics. For example, throughout Sumo’s office, intentional void spaces uncover the structural elements laying foundation to the office’s build. Rachel Weisberg, Sumo’s office boss, filled us in.

Notable hallmarks: Fully stocked “Sumo” bar; automatic standing desks; natural lighting with windows on three of four sides; onsite gym with free yoga and fitness classes; a secret, hidden lounge; a rooftop patio with downtown views, grills and hammocks; an onsite dog run; private call rooms; an office (musical) keyboard and bicycle; and neighbors that include Liberty Bar, The Grackle and Zilker Brewing.

Located on the 17th floor overlooking downtown Austin and Lady Bird Lake, LogicMonitor’s brand new office boasts some incredible views. The company joins Google, Deloitte and CBRE in one of the skyline’s newest additions, with amenities that include outdoor terraces, a 4,786-square-foot fitness center and two onsite restaurants. Stacey Richey, LogicMonitor’s senior manager of talent acquisition, weighed in on some of the team’s favorite in-office perks.

AdAction Interactive’s Austin team moved into a new tech space in Southwest Austin last November. The company’s cutting-edge office weighs in at triple the size of its previous location to make way for aggressive hiring plans in engineering and marketing. Dianne Wright, Adaction’s manager of people and culture, said the team favors the office’s new kitchen and lounge, which sets the perfect scene for catered lunches on Fridays.

Notable hallmarks: A game room with a basketball hoop and arcade game with over 120 classic games, an Austin wall mural, Austin-themed conference rooms with hi-tech capabilities, a fully-stocked kitchen and lounge area, collaborative open floor plan, adjustable desks and free parking.

Most popular office perks: Free, staff-selected lunches on Fridays, the fully-stocked kitchen, and the games, which include an ongoing Tenski basketball game and an upcoming arcade bowling tournament.

In 2014, Square Root execs asked their team if they’d like to continue working in bungalow-style houses in the Clarksville neighborhood, or if they’d prefer to move to a more traditional office space. Unanimously, the team voted to stay. That was when the team worked between three houses. Today, they weave between five. Square Root’s employee experience manager Emily Worthington shared what it’s like to “work from home.”
