Oversee multi-jurisdictional operational tax compliance, including property, fuel, mileage, highway use, and motor carrier tax returns, payments, reconciliations, audits, and accounting support. Research tax requirements, advise business partners, manage vendor deliverables, identify process improvements, support tax projects and system changes, and prepare audit documentation, training materials, and guidance.
This position will be domiciled at a FedEx Freight location in Memphis, TN or Harrison, AR. You will be required to work at a FedEx Freight Location several times per week.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Responsible for operational tax compliance, including property tax and fuel and mileage tax returns, audits, payments, accounting activities, research, and business advisory matters to ensure accurate reporting, reduce tax risk, and support business operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate and review property tax returns, renditions, assessment reports, and related filings for real and personal property using fixed asset data, location information, lease records, valuation notices, and jurisdictional filing instructions
- Oversee property tax bills and payments, reconcile assessments and payments to tax accounts, monitor deadlines, investigate variances, and support accruals, reserves, and other accounting activities for property tax obligations.
- Coordinate and review fuel tax, mileage tax, highway use tax, motor carrier tax, and related operational tax returns using fuel purchase data, mileage records, fleet information, jurisdictional rates, permits, and operating reports
- Responsible for payments, account reconciliations, return support, and accounting entries for fuel and mileage tax obligations, including investigation of data exceptions, jurisdictional notices, and differences between source systems and filed returns
- Oversee third party vendor’s inputs and deliverables to identify potential opportunities for in-sourcing
- Identify recurring filing, payment, data, assessment, or reconciliation issues and recommend changes to procedures, controls, templates, reporting logic, and system inputs to improve accuracy and efficiency
- Research property tax, fuel tax, mileage tax, highway use tax, and motor carrier tax requirements and provide practical guidance to finance, accounting, fleet, facilities, real estate, legal, information technology, and operations teams
- Gather fixed asset records, property listings, valuation notices, fuel purchase data, mileage records, exemption support, payment history, account reconciliations, and other documentation in response to property tax and fuel or mileage tax audits, notices, and information requests
- Analyze proposed assessments, penalties, interest, sampling adjustments, valuation disputes, and data exceptions; quantify exposure or refund opportunities; draft responses; and recommend resolution alternatives for management review
- Support special projects involving operational tax process changes, system implementations or testing, legal entity or facility changes, asset transfers, data clean-up initiatives, tax registrations, or other business transactions that affect property tax, fuel tax, mileage tax, or related tax accounting activities
- Prepare training materials, job aids, process documentation, and informal guidance for tax team members and business partners on recurring filing procedures, payment support requirements, documentation standards, system reports, and jurisdiction-specific operational tax requirements
- Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field required.
- Five (5) years of relevant operational tax, property tax, fuel tax, mileage tax, indirect tax, or state and local tax experience required.
- Experience in preparing or reviewing multi-jurisdictional returns, managing tax payments, supporting tax accounting and account reconciliations, researching state and local tax issues, supporting audits and notices, and advising business partners.
- Certified Public Accountant license, Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation designation, Master of Taxation degree, or progress toward one of these credentials preferred.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, attention to detail, strong written communication, effective stakeholder management, and the ability to work independently on recurring compliance and moderately complex advisory matters.
- Demonstrated experience with tax return compliance, tax payments, tax account reconciliations, tax accounting support, audit or notice support, and research involving state and local tax requirements.
- Strong Microsoft Excel, data analysis, and written communication with internal/external parties.
- Strong project management skills to manage internal and external teams in meeting timely filing and payment requirements.
- Ability to research tax guidance, interpret jurisdictional filing requirements, and apply technical conclusions to operational facts and business transactions.
