This is a U.S. based remote position. While this role does not require in-person attendance, we have a preference for candidates based in or near one of these cities: San Francisco CA, Portland OR, Seattle WA, Denver CO, and New York NY. Being in one of these cities creates opportunities to connect with teammates through Trail Days, co-working sessions, and local gatherings while still having the flexibility to work remotely. San Francisco employees are highly encouraged to come to the office one day per week.
As an Android Engineer at AllTrails, you’ll be an architect of the bridge between the digital world and the great outdoors. You won’t just be writing code; you’ll be building the tools that help millions of people find their way back home after a day on the trail. This is a foundational role where you’ll contribute to our native Android app while being mentored by senior engineers, spending your time writing clean code, learning our architecture, and gaining hands-on experience with a modern mobile stack.
What You'll Be Doing:
Design and build features in the AllTrails Android app that power our on-trail navigation and discovery experiences
Collaborate with cross-functional partners across design, product, analytics, and QA.
Identify and fix bugs to keep the app stable and reliable, even in low-connectivity environments
Deliver performant, reliable, scalable, and secure code that our users can trust on every adventure
Monitor app performance and help address scaling issues in partnership with more senior engineers
Requirements:
Demonstrable projects and results from 2+ years of developing native Android applications (professional or substantial personal/academic work)
Proficiency with Kotlin and familiarity with modern Android development patterns; experience with Coroutines and Flows for reactive state management is a plus.
Experience with Java and Android Studio
Familiarity with RESTful APIs and integrating backend services into mobile apps
Experience with Jetpack Compose or strong interest in learning and using Compose in production code
Exposure to local persistence technologies such as Room or SQLite and an interest in building offline-ready experiences
Proficiency with Git/GitHub or other distributed version control systems
Self-motivation and a deep sense of pride in your work, with attention to writing clean, maintainable code
Curiosity, humility, and open-mindedness—you’re eager to learn from feedback and from more senior teammates
Passion for mobile technologies and AllTrails’ mission to connect people to the outdoors.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (product, analytics, design) or similar project-based collaboration in school or internships
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
