The Role
Matterstack is hiring a Director of Lab Operations to develop world-class, advanced, automated laboratory facilities to support Matterstack’s mission. This is a greenfield opportunity whereby the physical lab and all lab services must be developed from scratch. You will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer of Matterstack on the operational aspects of the lab, as well as the Chief Scientist who will be the internal customer of lab services.
In this role you will
- Outline a vision for Matterstack’s laboratory requirements.
- Establish immediate access to existing external labs to support current projects.
- Lead the effort to locate at site, establish the lab, and outfit it.
- Hire and lead a team to staff and run the lab.
- Work with equipment vendors to specify and purchase equipment.
- Develop a supplier network to support the fab.
- Integrate world-class IT to integrate data for the scientists of Matterstack.
- Maintain the budget and cost control for the lab.
- Outline a roadmap for lab expansion, automation, and other requirements as business dictates.
Growth Path
The role is structured for meaningful growth. As Matterstack matures over the coming years, the Director of Lab Operations can expand with the company: greater ownership of operational programs, additional and more advanced labs, broader responsibility across the team, and increased autonomy in strategic execution. With strong performance, the longer-term trajectory could lead to broader operational leadership. Compensation will be reviewed at each step, with adjustments commensurate with the expanded scope of the role and the company's needs.

- Minimum Bachelors or equivalent experience in microelectronics engineering and management.
- Hands-on experience with tools and equipment.

Location
- The Director of Lab Operations must co-locate with the facility site, TBD.
- Travel: occasional travel to external labs, equipment vendors, and other locations necessary to run the operation.
Base salary for this position is $150,000, calibrated to the current scope of the role. Compensation will scale as the role and the company grow.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
This role is primarily performed in a standard office environment. The position may require sitting or standing for extended periods, working at a computer for long stretches, participating in video or in-person meetings, and occasionally lifting items up to 15 pounds.
