Position Summary

We are seeking a Director, Platform Engineering & DevOps to lead the development and maturation of our enterprise Platform Engineering organization.

This leader will be responsible for building a modern, automation-first platform primarily focused on Microsoft Azure, while supporting remaining legacy workloads in AWS and on-premises data centers during the company's migration to Azure.

The Director will lead the Platform Engineering team and partner closely with Network Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Security, and application Engineering to deliver secure, reliable, scalable, and highly automated infrastructure platforms.

A key objective of this role is to move the organization toward a self-service Platform Engineering model, enabling application teams to deploy and manage infrastructure using standardized patterns, Infrastructure as Code, automation, and cloud governance.

Role and Responsibilities

Build, lead, and develop the Platform Engineering organization, including engineering strategy, roadmap, standards, and operating model.

  • Lead the design and evolution of the company's enterprise Microsoft Azure platform, including landing zones, governance, identity, networking, security, observability, and resiliency.

  • Support the migration of applications and infrastructure from AWS and on-premises environments to Azure.

  • Establish Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation as the standard approach for provisioning and managing infrastructure.

  • Develop reusable Terraform modules, CI/CD pipelines, reference architectures, and standardized deployment patterns.

  • Build self-service platform capabilities and "golden paths" that improve developer productivity and reduce manual infrastructure provisioning.

  • Partner with Network Engineering on hybrid cloud connectivity, cloud networking, Private Link, DNS, routing, firewalls, and application delivery.

  • Partner with SRE to establish platform availability objectives, observability standards, resiliency practices, incident improvements, and operational readiness, leveraging Datadog Application

  • Partner with SRE and Application Engineering to establish consistent standards for application and platform telemetry, including metrics, logs, distributed traces, dashboards, alerting, and service-level monitoring.

  • Ensure cloud and platform services are appropriately instrumented and integrated with the enterprise observability platform.

  • Partner with Security to implement secure-by-default platform patterns, cloud governance, policy enforcement, and compliance controls.

  • Establish cloud cost-management and FinOps practices across Azure and remaining AWS environments.

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering leaders and senior technical talent.

  • Provide executive-level communication regarding platform strategy, technology risks, investments, reliability, and cloud transformation progress.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, Platform Engineering, systems engineering, or related disciplines, including significant engineering leadership experience.

  • Deep technical knowledge of Microsoft Azure, including enterprise cloud architecture, networking, security, governance, resiliency, and platform services.

  • Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation, particularly Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and Git-based engineering workflows.

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex cloud transformation initiatives, including hybrid environments, enterprise cloud migrations, or modernization of mission-critical infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or leading an enterprise Platform Engineering organization or Internal Developer Platform.

  • Working knowledge of AWS and experience supporting or migrating AWS workloads.

  • Experience with Azure Landing Zones, Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework, Azure Well-Architected Framework, and Azure Verified Modules.

  • Experience with Kubernetes and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

  • Experience with GitHub Enterprise, GitLab, GitHub Actions or comparable DevOps platforms.

  • Experience with enterprise observability and APM platforms, preferably Datadog, and technologies such as OpenTelemetry.

  • Experience implementing SRE practices including SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, resiliency engineering, and incident management.

  • Experience implementing cloud FinOps and cost optimization practices.

  • Experience operating technology platforms in healthcare, SaaS, financial services, or another regulated environment.

Success Metrics for the Role

Success will be measured by the Director's ability to build a scalable Platform Engineering organization and improve the speed, reliability, security, and efficiency of infrastructure delivery.

  • Increased percentage of infrastructure deployed and managed through Infrastructure as Code.

  • Increased adoption of standardized Azure landing zones, reusable platform services, and self-service capabilities.

  • Reduced infrastructure provisioning and application deployment lead times.

  • Progress migrating targeted AWS and on-premises workloads to Azure.

  • Improved platform availability and achievement of defined SLOs.

  • Increased adoption and effectiveness of standardized observability and APM practices across platform and application services, including improved service visibility and reduced mean time to detect and restore.

  • Reduction in infrastructure-related incidents, configuration drift, and manual production changes.

  • Improved developer satisfaction and adoption of Platform Engineering services.

  • Improved cloud governance, security compliance, and cost efficiency.

  • Successful recruitment, development, and retention of a high-performing Platform Engineering team.

As part of our hiring process, we verify identity and credentials, conduct interviews (live or video), and screen for fraud or misrepresentation. Applicants who falsify information will be disqualified.
