Optimize and administer SQL Server databases supporting multi-terabyte healthcare claims data. Responsibilities include tuning T-SQL, execution plans, indexing, partitioning, statistics, tempdb, memory, backups, high availability, and database monitoring. The role develops stored procedures and data structures, identifies claims overpayments, automates data mining processes, investigates root causes, and mentors analysts. Collaboration with infrastructure and business teams is required, along with ownership of small projects and performance improvements.

Machinify is a leading healthcare intelligence company with expertise across the payment continuum, delivering unmatched value, transparency, and efficiency to health plan clients across the country. Deployed by over 85 health plans, including many of the top 20, and representing more than 270 million lives, Machinify brings together a fully configurable and content-rich, AI-powered platform along with best-in-class expertise. We’re constantly reimagining what’s possible in our industry, creating disruptively simple, powerfully clear ways to maximize financial outcomes and drive down healthcare costs.

About the Opportunity

Every year, billions in medical and pharmacy claims flow through Machinify. Buried in that data are overpayments, billing errors, and patterns nobody has spotted yet, and the Data Mining Group (DMG) is the team that finds them. Every insight we surface helps health plans recover real dollars and brings down the cost of care for millions of members.

We’re looking for a SQL Server expert who gets a thrill out of making slow things fast. You’ll take queries that grind for hours across billions of rows and make them finish in minutes by reading execution plans, designing smart indexing and partitioning strategies, and tuning the database underneath it all. You’ll own the performance and health of the data platform DMG runs on, and you’ll turn that speed into new data mining capabilities that weren’t possible before. If you’ve spent years as a DBA or database engineer and want your work to have a direct, measurable impact on healthcare costs, we’d love to talk.

We are looking for someone who doesn’t settle for the quick fix. When something looks off, you’ll dig until you find the underlying cause, and you’ll fix it for good. At our scale, that habit pays off in a big way: every root cause eliminated means faster mining cycles, fewer missed overpayments, less rework, and more dollars recovered for our clients. Those gains compound month after month and flow straight to the bottom line.

What you’ll do

  • Make big data fast. Tune complex T-SQL against multi-terabyte claims datasets using execution plans, Query Store, wait statistics, DMVs, and Extended Events, and measure the before and after.
  • Engineer for performance. Design and maintain indexing (clustered, nonclustered, filtered, columnstore), partitioning, and statistics strategies that cut runtimes and resource usage at scale.
  • Keep the platform healthy. Monitor database performance, resolve blocking and deadlocks, tune tempdb and memory, and partner with infrastructure on capacity planning, backups, and high availability.
  • Build the foundation. Develop the stored procedures, views, and data structures that power our data mining work, making thoughtful normalization and denormalization choices.
  • Find the money. Write, run, and monitor SQL that examines, interprets, and visualizes trends in medical and pharmacy claims, uncovering overpayments and new recovery opportunities.
  • Chase the root cause. Investigate every slowdown, data anomaly, and dip in findings until you know exactly why it happened, then fix it for good. Continual root-cause analysis prevents repeat issues, protects recovery dollars, and turns one-time fixes into lasting savings for Machinify and our clients.
  • Automate and innovate. Continuously improve our data mining and enrichment processes, building tools and automation that make the whole team faster.
  • Lead and level up the team. Own small projects end to end, review SQL and coach analysts on writing efficient queries, and work closely with other departments to align data insights with business goals.

What you bring

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA, database engineer, or performance-focused database developer.
  • Expert-level T-SQL and a proven track record of query optimization: you can read an execution plan, pinpoint the bottleneck, and fix it (and you have a story about the time you did).
  • Deep knowledge of SQL Server internals, including indexing, statistics, partitioning, Query Store, DMVs, wait stats, and Extended Events.
  • A root-cause mindset: you don’t settle for workarounds, and you can show how getting to the bottom of a problem saved time, money, or both.
  • Experience working with large-scale data: multi-terabyte databases, billion-row tables, or enterprise data warehouses.
  • Solid grounding in database administration fundamentals such as backup and recovery, high availability (Always On Availability Groups), security, and monitoring.
  • A proactive problem-solver who can juggle multiple priorities and explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Bonus points

  • Experience with medical and pharmacy claims or healthcare payment integrity.
  • Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or cloud database migrations.
  • Automation with PowerShell or Python.
  • Data warehouse design and columnstore indexing.

  • Top Medical/Dental/Vision offerings
  • FSA/HSA
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Competitive salary, 401(k) with company match
