Mission

TAR’s mission is to power intelligence for the world. We are building the world’s first off-grid power plant for data centers powered by renewable technologies.

We firmly believe AI should be built in the US for the benefit of all people. For that, power must be fast, clean and scalable. We are singularly focused on delivering GW-scale power faster than anyone has ever done, by rethinking every layer of the stack.

We vertically integrate to solve every bottleneck, from racking systems to power electronics to dispatch algorithms to on-site construction.

Leave your mark on the future of civilization-scale energy infrastructure.

Company

TAR is both a hardware and software company, we are building out massive, critical, physical infrastructure. (TAR is working directly with one of the largest compute providers to scale and deploy 5GWs by 2028)

We operate on…

  • High ownership. High Agency. Own project end-to-end. Great people don’t need to be managed.

  • Speed. We achieve great things on incredible timelines. We push ourselves to go faster.

  • First principles. No ego. No hierarchy. Challenge every assumption.

  • Passion. Solving the energy problem is one of the largest challenges that faces the world now and in the future.

About the role

As an Electrical Engineer in the robotics program, you own those electronics end-to-end, from schematic capture through layout, bring-up, and validation, to the debug session that happens in the dirt at a live site. This is a mid to senior level individual contributor role based at our San Francisco robotics facility, with regular field time at our GW-scale campus in West Texas.

Responsibilities
  • Own the electrical architecture of TAR’s deployment machines, including high- and low-voltage distribution, battery and charging systems, and the power budget for robots that work a full shift off-grid.

  • Design boards end-to-end for motor control, sensing, power, and compute: schematic capture, layout, bring-up, and validation.

  • Specify and integrate motor drives and actuation electronics, working with mechanical and controls engineers on current sensing, loop tuning, and protection.

  • Integrate the sensors and compute that enable core autonomy functions: navigation, perception, controls, and comms.

  • Design harnesses, connectors, and enclosures that survive dust, heat, vibration, and rough handling on an active jobsite.

  • Own EMI/EMC, grounding, thermal, and electrical safety, including E-stops, interlocks, overcurrent protection, and fault handling on machines that move heavy loads around people.

  • Bring up new hardware on the bench and in the field, and debug it under real load.

  • Own the build package and manufacturer handoff: sourceable BOMs, testable boards, and harnesses built for repeatable production.

Qualifications
  • 4+ years of electrical engineering experience on robotic, vehicle, or electromechanical systems

  • End-to-end PCB design experience on hardware you then brought up and debugged under load.

  • Power electronics depth across battery packs and BMS, DC-DC conversion, power distribution, and charging.

  • Track record shipping hardware with vendors and contract manufacturers.

  • High ownership, bias for speed, and comfort with ambiguity.

Nice to have
  • High-voltage battery systems and traction-class power electronics.

  • Functional safety for mobile machinery (ISO 13849, ISO 25119, or similar).

  • Ruggedization and ingress protection for outdoor or off-highway equipment.

  • Firmware fluency: embedded C/C++, RTOS, and CAN.

  • Experience with off-highway, construction, or agricultural vehicle electrical systems.

Salary and Benefits
  • Up to $15K relocation bonus

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance

  • $1K monthly stipend for meals

What you need to know about the Austin Tech Scene

Austin has a diverse and thriving tech ecosystem thanks to home-grown companies like Dell and major campuses for IBM, AMD and Apple. The state’s flagship university, the University of Texas at Austin, is known for its engineering school, and the city is known for its annual South by Southwest tech and media conference. Austin’s tech scene spans many verticals, but it’s particularly known for hardware, including semiconductors, as well as AI, biotechnology and cloud computing. And its food and music scene, low taxes and favorable climate has made the city a destination for tech workers from across the country.

Key Facts About Austin Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 180,500; 13.7% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Dell, IBM, AMD, Apple, Alphabet
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, hardware, cloud computing, software, healthtech
  • Funding Landscape: $4.5 billion in VC funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Live Oak Ventures, Austin Ventures, Hinge Capital, Gigafund, KdT Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, Silverton Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Texas, Southwestern University, Texas State University, Center for Complex Quantum Systems, Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, Texas Advanced Computing Center
