OP Labs is the team building the technology behind Optimism, the leading blockchain infrastructure provider powering 65% of all Layer 2 transactions. Our open-source OP Stack enables developers and enterprises to launch scalable, secure, and customizable onchain networks with ease. Backed by a16z, Paradigm, and others, OP Labs has raised over $175M to drive the next generation of onchain innovation.

Role and Responsibilities

We’re looking for a Scaling Manager to lead our Scaling team and drive performance, efficiency, and upgrade velocity across the Superchain. In this high-impact role, you will lead the team responsible for coordinating and delivering protocol upgrades, improving the speed and cost-efficiency of the OP Stack, and ensuring that scaling improvements are rolled out quickly and safely across a growing ecosystem of chains.

The Scaling team sits at the intersection of protocol engineering, performance optimization, and ecosystem coordination. You’ll work closely with internal product and engineering partners, as well as Superchain partners, to help evolve the OP Stack and ensure the Superchain continues to scale reliably.

What are the role responsibilities?

This is a small, highly technical team. We expect the manager to be a player-coach, capable and willing to dive deep into technical details, guide execution, and lead by example. While this role is management-focused, technical fluency and hands-on leadership are critical to success.

  • Lead and coordinate protocol upgrades across the Superchain, from planning through execution and rollout

  • Drive benchmarking and performance analysis efforts to make the OP Stack faster, cheaper, and more efficient

  • Empower the team to deliver upgrades more quickly and safely, improving tooling, processes, and operational rigor

  • Build and reinforce a strong shipping culture focused on reliability, correctness, and continuous improvement

  • Collaborate closely with product, protocol, and infrastructure teams to set priorities and sequencing for scaling initiatives

  • Partner with Superchain teams and external stakeholders to align on upgrades, timelines, and performance goals

  • Manage team career development through coaching, continuous feedback, goal setting, and development plans

What skills do you bring?

  • 2+ years of people management experience, ideally at a high-growth or technically complex organization

  • Experience recruiting, building, and retaining high-performing engineering teams

  • Experience managing geographically distributed teams

  • Strong background in distributed systems, protocol engineering, or large-scale infrastructure

  • Experience leading or contributing to benchmarking, performance analysis, and performance engineering (a strong plus)
Ability to translate complex technical work into clear plans and priorities for diverse stakeholders

  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment with high technical and organizational ambiguity

  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills

What will you like about us?

  • We take care of our employees. Competitive compensation, fully paid medical, dental, and vision, and a 4% 401K match.

  • We take pride in the accomplishments of our teammates and support each other in doing the best work of our careers.

  • Our team is a diverse group of people from varied backgrounds. We cherish our eclecticism and consider it a great strength.

  • We’re fully remote, deeply engaged, highly skilled, and like to have fun.

  • We think long-term. Our founders have been scaling Ethereum since 2015.
