Forward Deployed Accountant / Tax Technologist

We’re looking for a customer-embedded tax professional who can turn TaxGPT into production-ready workflows inside accounting firms: someone who speaks fluent tax, redesigns how work gets done, and feeds what they learn straight back into product.

Remote (US) · Travel Required (Approximately 30–40%) · Full Time · Base Pay $100,000 to $120,000 + Variable Compensation $20,000 to $24,000 (20%)

About the Role
TaxGPT is building the intelligence layer for tax. We’ve partnered with over 5,000 firms and 6,000+ businesses, from lean CPA firms to global enterprises, to redefine how professionals research, collaborate, and execute tax workflows using AI. Recently named one of Business Insider’s 30 Early-Stage Startups Most Likely to Become Tech’s Next Unicorns, we’re scaling the operating system for tax, accounting, and advisory firms.

You will join as a founding Forward Deployed Accountant / Tax Technologist, our version of the forward-deployed role pioneered in AI companies, adapted for tax and accounting. You will embed with TaxGPT customers (CPA firms, tax practices, and finance teams), map how work actually moves through the firm, configure and operationalize TaxGPT against those workflows, train teams to adopt, and surface field patterns that shape our product roadmap.

This is not a pure software engineering role, and it is not classic customer success. You bring accounting and tax judgment into the room, redesign workflows with AI in the loop, and close the gap between what the product can do and what the firm needs done during research, prep, review, planning, and client delivery. You move quickly from discovery to durable playbooks, under tight feedback loops with real users and real client work.

If you thrive in ambiguity, earn trust with partners and preparers alike, and want to help write how tax firms adopt AI, this is for you.

What You’ll Do
  • Embed with TaxGPT customers to map tax and accounting workflows, de-risk constraints (process, systems, seasonality, risk), and define crisp success metrics for each deployment.
  • Design → pilot → operationalize AI-powered tax workflows: configure TaxGPT around firm processes for research, document analysis, prep support, review, memos, planning, and client work, then harden those workflows so they hold up in busy season.
  • Lead implementation and change: run kickoffs, build rollout plans, train partners, managers, preparers, and ops staff, and hand off durable playbooks and champions so wins scale beyond one engagement.
  • Work inside the product with customers: diagnose where a workflow breaks, find practical workarounds, stay on the problem until the firm can run it confidently day to day.
  • Partner with sales, success, and product on high-value accounts: support complex activations, prove ROI (time saved, quality lifted, capacity unlocked), and help turn strong deployments into deeper adoption and expansion.
  • Surface field patterns (recurring prompts, failure modes, edge cases, training gaps, and missing capabilities) and feed them into TaxGPT’s product and engineering roadmap with concrete, reproducible examples.
  • Build the forward-deployed playbook for TaxGPT: templates, evals of real tax tasks, onboarding kits, and implementation patterns that make the next firm faster than the last.
  • Travel to customer offices and industry events when in-person presence will improve the work; join periodic company gatherings at our San Francisco headquarters.
What You’ll Need
  • 3+ years in public accounting, tax (prep, review, planning, consulting or compliance), firm operations, client accounting services, or a closely related role, ideally inside a CPA firm or tax practice.
  • Deep fluency in how accounting firms operate; you can speak credibly with a managing partner, a tax manager, a preparer, and an ops lead in the same week.
  • Proven ability to teach and drive change: you explain a new workflow plainly, notice when someone is lost, and adjust without making them feel behind.
  • Comfort getting into the details of returns, research memos, document packages, review notes, and busy-season bottlenecks, and using judgment to redesign them with AI.
  • Strong bias for action under ambiguity: you scope open-ended problems, ship a workable process fast, measure what matters, and iterate with real users.
  • Technical fluency with modern AI tools and tax/accounting software, not as a software engineer, but as someone who can configure products, learn systems quickly, and collaborate with product and engineering.
  • Clear, concise communication; low-ego collaboration; appetite for pairing in person with customers and teammates.
  • Willingness to travel as customer work requires (typically periodic onsite visits and industry events).

Nice-to-Haves
  • Active CPA, EA, or progress toward one; MST or strong tax specialization is a plus.
  • Experience implementing tax or accounting software (e.g., CCH Axcess, Thomson Reuters, Lacerte, UltraTax, Drake, practice-management or document systems).
  • Prior role in tax technology, firm transformation, AI enablement, professional-services implementation, or solutions consulting.
  • Early-stage startup experience, or a track record of building the playbook while doing the work.
  • Familiarity with how AI copilots, retrieval workflows, and prompt/eval loops show up in professional services (you don’t need to build the models; you need to make them useful in tax work).
  • Experience leading training programs, change management, or process improvement inside a firm.

How We Define Success in This Role
A strong Forward Deployed Accountant / Tax Technologist:
  • Takes firms from signed contract (or strategic expansion) to confident, repeatable daily use of TaxGPT in live client work.
  • Leaves behind playbooks and champions, not one-off heroics, so adoption survives busy season and staff turnover.
  • Turns messy, firm-specific workflows into patterns that product and engineering can ship for the next hundred firms.
  • Earns trust as the tax-domain voice of the customer inside TaxGPT, and as the TaxGPT expert inside the firm.
  • Measures outcomes that matter to partners: hours saved, review cycles shortened, capacity unlocked, risk reduced, and quality maintained or improved.

What We Offer
Compensation: Competitive base salary plus equity (range to be confirmed for this role)
Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision; 401(k) with match; life insurance; equity
Remote-first: Work from anywhere in the U.S., with customer travel as needed and occasional time at our San Francisco headquarters

Growth: High-impact founding seat on a forward-deployed function you help define
Culture: We’re a high-trust, high-output team. Expect fast feedback loops, real ownership, and cross-functional collaboration
