Code Hunter is looking for a Junior Backend Developer to join our engineering team. This role is remote, with a preference for candidates based in the US Eastern time zone for overlap with the team.

You'll report directly to the SVP of Engineering and work closely day-to-day with our engineering lead, who will provide technical mentorship and code review as you ramp up on our systems. Our backend runs on Java/Spring Boot and AWS — you don't need to already know Java going in, but you should be able to pick it up quickly, especially leveraging modern AI-assisted development tools. What matters most is strong fundamentals and the ability to learn fast. This is a great opportunity for someone with 1-3 years of professional experience to grow into ownership of real production systems.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and REST APIs (our stack is Java/Spring Boot)
  • Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and participate in code reviews
  • Work with relational databases to design schemas, write queries, and troubleshoot data issues
  • Deploy and support services running on AWS, following our existing infrastructure patterns
  • Debug and resolve production issues, escalating and collaborating with the team lead as needed
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate ramp-up and day-to-day delivery
  • Collaborate closely with the engineering lead and cross-functional partners (product, QA) to scope and ship features
  • Continuously learn our codebase, engineering practices, and domain, and grow toward more independent ownership over time

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • 1-3 years of professional experience as a backend or full-stack developer, in any language
  • Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, debugging, and problem-solving
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new languages/frameworks quickly — Java/Spring Boot experience is a plus but not required, and we expect you to ramp up fast with the help of modern AI-assisted development tools
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL)
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment while communicating proactively
  • A growth mindset — comfortable asking questions, receiving feedback, and building toward greater ownership

Nice to have:

  • Working knowledge of Java and Spring / Spring Boot
  • Some exposure to AWS or another major cloud provider
  • Experience with Docker and CI/CD pipelines
  • Exposure to microservices architecture
  • Contributions to open-source projects or personal projects you can speak to

Location & Logistics

  • Remote, with a strong preference for candidates based in or near the US Eastern time zone
  • Full-time

Benefits
  • Salary between $85,000 and $110,000
  • Medical, dental & vision insurance coverage for you and family
  • 401k
  • Unlimited PTO
