Position Details:
  • Location: 40 Holland St, Somerville, MA
  • Department: Laboratory
  • Schedule: Full time, 40 hours/weekly. Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm or 9:00am - 5:00pm. Rotating Weekends and Holidays

As a Lab Section Supervisor (MT) you will supervise the daily operations of a sub-group or specific shift(s) of a larger laboratory to assure the delivery of the highest quality of chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic testing. Ensures the accurate and timely reporting of clinically useful results.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Directs and coordinates daily operations of a sub-group or shift of a larger laboratory. Oversees collection, processing and distribution of specimens to ensure accurate and timely testing and cost-effective operations. Prepares staff schedules and ensures adequate staff coverage. Works with manager to ensure adequate clinical and support coverage within departments of responsibility. With direction, resolves problems and/or recommends solutions to departmental issues. Keeps manager updated on all operational issues that arise. Escalates all non-routine issues
  • Provides laboratory expertise and guidance to staff and serves as internal consultant on technical issues. Directs staff on difficult procedures. Identifies and analyzes inconsistent results. Suggest changes to increase the validity and reliability of results. Collaborates with laboratory management to plan, design, and direct installation of new or improved laboratory techniques. Consults with pathologists on unusual cases
  • Implement quality control measures and monitors work quality for compliance with changes to increase the validity and reliability of results. Identifies conflicts and problem areas and intervenes toward resolution of these problems. Works with the lab and/or the practice to ensure the successful delivery and continuity of laboratory services
  • Provides administrative presence for patient/staff inquiries and requests. Resolves problems within a broad scope of established parameters. Involves manager when clarification is needed and keeps manager informed of progress. Counsels' lab personnel who are having difficulty maintaining standards. Interacts and consults with medical providers about patients and problem lab work
  • Monitors inventory and procurement systems. Works with Building Services and Purchasing to secure supplies and equipment necessary to operations. Works with outside vendors to assure a high level of laboratory service. Assures that laboratory equipment is maintained in the proper working condition
  • May assist in the monitoring and management of departmental operating budgets. May monitor budget variances. May be involved in budget development process. May be asked to provide budget reports
  • May prepare and analyze various qualitative and quantitative management reports, including productivity and process reports, incident reports, and QA reports. May maintain department policy and procedure manual
  • Represents the department as needed at meetings and conferences
  • Functions as a medical technologist. May duplicate work of others to confirm test results. Re-evaluates methodology, makes recommended changes, and assists in test interpretation. Determines if further testing is needed on samples or if test should be repeated. Perform duties of subordinates as needed by absence or peak workload
  • Supervises a group of technical and non-technical nonexempt staff
  • Recruiting, interviewing, selecting, orienting and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work
  • Evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; reviewing personnel actions of subordinates and addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Establishes standards, normal values, and methods of control for each laboratory test performed. Inspects and verifies work of staff to ensure technical output complies with standards for quality. Reviews and approves final test results and quality control results. Attests to the validity and accuracy of the results. Performs daily quality control and monitors on-going results

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent experience
  • Must meet the federal requirements of CLIA 88 qualifications for laboratory supervisor
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty
  • 3+ years of experience as medical technologist
  • General experience working with LIS products

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Medical Technologist (ASCP) preferred (or an equivalent certification)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) if role is in a patient-facing capacity
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory environment
  • Demonstrated organizational, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Proven solid analytical, problem resolution and business judgement skills
  • Proven ability to multi-task
  • Proven effective written and verbal communication skills

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $72,800 - $130,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
