About this Role:

The Managing Director is the operational right hand to the Business Unit Lead for the Advisory business unit, responsible for the day-to-day management of the unit’s people, client teams, and delivery. The Managing Director runs the engine of the business, leading all client teams, managing the day-to-day P&L, and owning hiring and staffing, so the Business Unit Lead can focus on growth, key client relationships, and the overall direction of the unit. While the Business Unit Lead retains ultimate ownership of the P&L and the unit’s results, the Managing Director is accountable for executing against the plan day to day and for the performance and well-being of the team. Reports to the Senior Managing Director of the Advisory Business Unit of Consertus.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Team & Delivery Management

  • Lead and oversee all client teams within the Advisory business unit, ensuring engagements are delivered with quality, on scope, and on budget.
  • Serve as the senior point of escalation for delivery issues, client concerns, and staffing conflicts across the unit’s engagements.
  • Partner with Program Directors and client managers to monitor engagement health, manage risks, and maintain strong client satisfaction.
  • Ensure consistent delivery standards and adherence to Consertus’ leading practices across every client team.

People Leadership & Hiring

  • Own day-to-day hiring for the business unit: manage the evaluation, hiring, and onboarding of staff to build teams capable of delivering the plan.
  • Manage the performance, development, and well-being of the unit’s staff, setting clear expectations and providing regular coaching and feedback.
  • Plan and manage staffing, utilization, and FTE projections across current engagements and upcoming work, coordinating with leadership and HR.
  • Develop emerging leaders and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement consistent with Consertus values.

P&L & Operational Management

  • Manage the day-to-day P&L for the business unit — tracking revenue, utilization, margin, and costs against budget — in partnership with the Business Unit Lead, who retains ultimate ownership.
  • Monitor financial performance, manage forecasts, and proactively flag and address variances to protect and grow margin.
  • Oversee accurate, timely invoicing and financial reporting in coordination with project accounting.
  • Ensure required reports are delivered on time and keep the Business Unit Lead informed of performance, risks, and resourcing needs.

Supporting the Business Unit Lead

  • Act as a trusted second-in-command, deputizing for the Business Unit Lead on operational decisions and in their absence.
  • Translate the unit’s strategy and growth plan into day-to-day execution across teams and engagements.
  • Support pursuits and growth by ensuring delivery capacity and staffing are aligned to won work and the pipeline.
  • Support the Business Unit Lead as required on growth, key clients, and overall P&L ownership by owning the day-to-day running of the unit.
  • Also be a seller-doer in supporting the Business Unit Lead with identification of new opportunities.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Significant experience in capital program management, advisory, consulting, or a related professional services environment, including managing teams and client delivery, with a particular focus in public sector clients.
  • Proven people-leadership and hiring experience, with the ability to build, develop, and retain high-performing teams.
  • Strong operational and financial acumen, including familiarity with P&L management, utilization, and project economics.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; able to manage many client teams and priorities at once.
  • Proficiency with tools such as Excel, Salesforce and Vantagepoint.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree or professional certifications a plus.

Performance Expectations

  • Client teams delivering with quality and meeting client satisfaction and retention goals.
  • Day-to-day P&L managed on plan, with utilization, margin, and forecasts kept on track.
  • A fully staffed, high-performing unit, with hiring and development goals met.
  • The Business Unit Lead freed to focus on growth and strategy, supported by reliable day-to-day operational leadership.

What’s In It For You:

  • Company-paid life and disability insurance
  • Optional benefits like pet insurance, legal, and supplemental health plans
  • 401(k) with day-one eligibility. You’ll get a 100% match on the first 3% of your eligible compensation and 50% match on contributions between 3% and 5% of your pay.
  • Generous time off: 10 paid holidays and PTO starting at 15 days, growing up to 25
  • Access to Consertus Academy for continuous learning and development

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:
