Mechanical Design EngineerAbout Paradromics

Brain-related illness is one of the last great frontiers in medicine, not because the brain is unknowable, but because it has been inaccessible. Paradromics is building a brain-computer interface (BCI) platform that records brain activity at the highest possible resolution: the individual neuron. AI algorithms then decode this massive amount of brain-data, enabling the seamless translation of thought into treatments.

Our first clinical application, the Connexus® BCI, will help people who are unable to speak, due to ALS, spinal cord injuries and stroke, to communicate independently through digital devices. However, the capabilities of our BCI platform go far beyond our first application. With the brain in direct communication with digital devices, we can leverage technology to transform how we treat conditions ranging from sensory and motor deficits to untreatable mental illness.

The Role

Paradromics is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Product Development team in Austin, TX. In this role, you will provide dedicated mechanical design support across product development, engineering, testing, and manufacturing activities. You will design tooling, fixtures, mechanical components, and assemblies using SolidWorks, taking projects from initial concepts through detailed CAD, engineering drawings, fabrication, and implementation.

This role is ideal for a hands-on, detail-oriented engineer who enjoys solving practical mechanical problems and turning ideas into functional hardware. You will work closely with engineers, technicians, manufacturing teams, and external suppliers to develop reliable, manufacturable solutions that support our product development efforts. You will also help build internal mechanical design capabilities, increase engineering throughput, and reduce reliance on limited external design resources.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, tooling, and fixtures to support product development, testing, manufacturing, and general engineering activities.
  • Own mechanical design projects from initial requirements and concept development through detailed CAD modeling, drawing release, fabrication, and physical implementation.
  • Create and maintain accurate SolidWorks models, assemblies, and engineering drawings, applying appropriate tolerancing, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) principles.
  • Translate engineering requirements and open-ended technical problems into practical mechanical designs that meet functional, dimensional, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technicians, machinists, fabricators, manufacturers, and suppliers to select appropriate materials and fabrication methods and ensure designs can be manufactured and implemented successfully.
  • Design fixtures and tooling for assembly, testing, inspection, and other engineering workflows, improving repeatability and efficiency across development and manufacturing activities.
  • Evaluate prototypes and fabricated parts, identify design issues, and iterate on mechanical solutions based on testing, fit checks, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Manage multiple design projects and competing priorities while delivering high-quality designs and documentation on schedule.
  • Build and maintain knowledge of existing mechanical designs, tooling, fixtures, and assemblies to improve continuity and establish sustainable internal mechanical design capabilities.
  • Support continuous improvement of mechanical design practices, documentation, and workflows across the Product Development team.
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related engineering discipline; equivalent practical experience may also be considered.
Required Qualifications
  • 2–6 years of professional mechanical design experience, with strong proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex part modeling, assemblies, engineering drawings, and iterative mechanical design.
  • Experience designing mechanical components, assemblies, tooling, or fixtures based on engineering requirements or open-ended technical problems.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including dimensional tolerances, fits, fasteners, materials, mechanisms, and design for manufacturability.
  • Experience creating and interpreting engineering drawings, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Demonstrated ability to take designs from CAD through fabrication and physical implementation, incorporating feedback from machinists, fabricators, manufacturers, or suppliers.
  • Ability to independently own mechanical design projects, manage competing priorities, and deliver accurate, manufacturable designs on schedule.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to maintain organized, accurate CAD models and engineering documentation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, technician, and supplier teams.
  • A practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving and a willingness to iterate on designs to achieve functional and manufacturable solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with mechanical design for medical devices or other complex hardware products.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry, particularly within an ISO 13485 quality management system.
  • Experience designing tooling, fixtures, and test equipment for medical device development or manufacturing.
  • Hands-on familiarity with fabrication methods such as CNC machining, 3D printing, injection molding, laser processing, or sheet metal fabrication.
  • Experience designing fixtures for assembly, testing, inspection, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience working directly with machine shops, contract manufacturers, and external suppliers to fabricate and refine mechanical designs.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, iterative hardware development, and hands-on evaluation of fabricated parts.
  • Experience working with active implantable medical devices or other highly regulated hardware systems.
