- KXAN is hiring a Multiskilled Journalist to join our in-depth, investigative team in Central Texas. This position requires gathering and producing compelling content for online and on-air platforms in a manner that is clear, engaging and meaningful to the local news audience. This journalist is expected to embody KXAN’s in-depth brand by providing context, clarity and deeper understanding in each report.
- Produce and report news stories for digital and broadcast news platforms, describing the background and details of events
- Write reports for the web and other eMedia platforms, reviewing copy to correct errors in content, grammar and punctuation, following prescribed editorial style and formatting guidelines
- Arrange interviews with people who can provide information about stories
- Determine a story’s emphasis, length and format, and organize material accordingly
- Research and analyze background information related to news stories to be able to provide complete and accurate information
- Gather information about events and issues through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions
- Pitch stories to news managers and news producers which are timely and relevant to the local community
- Receive assignments and evaluate leads and tips to develop story ideas
- Discuss issues with producers and/or news managers to establish priorities or positions
- Revise work to meet editorial approval and to fit time requirements
- Shoot and edit video to craft news reports
- Ensure that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience
- Fluency in English
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to ad lib when required
- Minimum two years’ experience in news reporting (Depending on market size)
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Superior on-air presence and delivery
- Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
- Flexibility to work any shift
