Job Summary:
PayPal's Test Environment, Platform & Services organization is the backbone of developer productivity for over 2,000 engineering teams across ~3,000 applications. We own and operate the test infrastructure, data platforms, and tooling that enable engineers to build and ship with confidence at scale.We're looking for a Principal Architect to join our architecture team and help drive the technical vision, platform evolution, and engineering excellence across our test services portfolio. This is a high-impact, broad-scope role — spanning test infrastructure strategy, developer experience, and cloud modernization — with direct influence on how PayPal engineers build and deliver software.

Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:

What You'll Do
Technical Strategy & Architecture
- Define and evolve the architectural roadmap for key test platforms, with primary focus on the Test Data Platform, Observability, and test environments.
- Establish architectural patterns, standards, and reference designs that scale across PayPal's global engineering organization.
- Lead technical design reviews and provide architectural guidance across the test services portfolio Identify opportunities to reduce toil, improve reliability, and accelerate platform modernization.
Test Data & Observability
- Architect scalable solutions for synthetic test data generation, provisioning, and lifecycle management.
- Drive the evolution of test data management to support growing demand across thousands of applications and diverse test scenarios.
- Define data governance, security, and compliance patterns for test data across environments.
Test Environments
- Lead the architectural vision for test environments supporting 2,000+ developer teams.
- Design for environment scalability, stability, and cost efficiency as usage grows. Collaborate with infrastructure teams to align test environment architecture with cloud modernization goals, including migration from Mesos to Kubernetes.
Cross-Platform Leadership
- Partner with engineering managers, product managers, and peer architects to align technical investment with business priorities.
- Mentor and provide thought leadership to senior and staff engineers across the organization.
- Evaluate and champion emerging technologies and industry best practices in test infrastructure.
Developer Experience & Standards
- Advocate for developer experience as a first-class architectural concern.
- Define standards and tooling that improve onboarding, usability, and self-service capabilities for PayPal's engineering community.
- Contribute to test strategy frameworks and quality engineering standards across the enterprise
What We're Looking For
- Required 10+ years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time in architecture or principal-level technical roles.
- Strong experience with test data management — synthetic data generation, provisioning pipelines, lifecycle governance, or equivalent data platform work. Experience with test environment architecture at enterprise scale — service virtualization, environment orchestration, isolation strategies, or similar.
- Ability to design distributed systems and platform services that operate at scale (high availability, large consumer base).
- Hands-on familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure — Kubernetes, container orchestration, CI/CD Strong collaboration skills; comfortable influencing without authority across large engineering organizations
Preferred — not required, and we're happy to help you grow in these areas.
- Experience with service virtualization tools such as WireMock or equivalent.
- Familiarity with CI/CD platforms such as Harness or Jenkins.
- Experience with observability tooling (e.g., Datadog) in a platform or infrastructure context.
- Background in FinTech, payments, or other regulated high-scale environments.
- Prior work in developer productivity or platform engineering organizations.
