The Principal Software Engineer codes, designs, and enhances software applications based on business and platform requirements. This role provides strategic technical guidance and hands-on engineering expertise to multiple functional teams. The Principal Software Engineer is a recognized subject matter expert who influences enterprise-wide platforms, applies advanced technical knowledge across multiple domains, and contributes directly to the delivery of complex, high-impact initiatives in a regulated environment.

The Principal Software Engineer serves as a hands-on technical authority for an enterprise Appian platform supporting multiple business initiatives. This role standardizes engineering quality, development practices, and platform governance while actively designing and developing software solutions across concurrent initiatives.

  • Designs, develops, and enhances enterprise software solutions using Appian low-code capabilities, including process models, SAIL interfaces, record types, expression rules, and reusable components

  • Applies advanced expertise in Appian platform configuration, security models, and performance optimization to resolve complex technical issues

  • Develops and supports Appian integrations using RESTful services, APIs, and enterprise data sources

  • Contributes hands-on to Appian-based workflow and case management solutions supporting multiple concurrent initiatives

  • Evaluates and implements Appian platform features and upgrades to improve scalability, reliability, and developer efficiency

  • Provides technical guidance on Appian best practices while ensuring alignment with enterprise engineering standards

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of active Appian experience with deep expertise in enterprise-wide enablement.

  • Hands-on development experience with Appian.

  • Experience with Autoscale techniques and high throughput/volume application design

  • Experience developing workflow-driven and case-based applications in large-scale environments

  • Strong understanding of platform security, integrations, and data access patterns. Hands on experience with API development.

  • Experience in AI Modeling & effective use of Appian AI capabilities.

  • This role operates in a HIPAA-regulated healthcare environment, requiring strong discipline around security, compliance, auditability, and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Appian Certified Lead Developer or Appian Certified Architect or equivalent platform certification.

WAH requirements

  • WAH requirements: Must have the ability to provide a high-speed DSL or cable modem for a home office. Associates or contractors who live and work from home in the state of California will be provided payment for their internet expense.

  • A minimum standard speed for optimal performance of 25x10 (25mpbs download x 10mpbs upload) is required.  

  • Satellite and Wireless Internet service is NOT allowed for this role.

  • A dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.

Travel: While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana's offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.


 

$156,600 - $215,400 per year


 

This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
