About Us

FAR.AI is a non-profit AI research institute dedicated to ensuring advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone. We work at the intersection of machine learning, safety research, and policy, supporting a global community of researchers and practitioners. Our mission is to facilitate breakthrough AI safety research, advance global understanding of AI risks and solutions, and foster a coordinated global response.

Since our founding in July 2022, we've grown quickly to 40+ staff, producing 30+ influential academic papers, and established the leading AI Safety events for research, and international cooperation. Our work is recognized globally, with publications at premier venues and features in the Financial Times, Nature News, and MIT Technology Review.

We drive practical change through red-teaming with frontier model developers and government institutions. Most recently, we discovered major issues with Anthropic’s latest model the same day it was released, and worked with OpenAI to safeguard their latest model. Additionally, we help steer and grow the AI safety field through developing research roadmaps with renowned researchers such as Yoshua Bengio. We also operate FAR.Labs, an AI safety-focused co-working space in Berkeley housing 40 members, as well as support the community through targeted grants to technical researchers.

About the Role

We are hiring our first in-house Recruiter to partner closely with leadership and hiring managers as we scale the organization. Over the next 12–18 months, this role will be critical in helping FAR.AI grow to roughly double its current size while establishing high-quality, repeatable recruiting processes.

Reporting to the Head of People, this is a hands-on, full-cycle role suited for a mid-level recruiter who is comfortable operating independently, managing multiple concurrent searches, and serving as a trusted partner to hiring managers across both technical and non-technical functions.

Why This Role / Why Now

FAR.AI is entering a pivotal phase of growth, backed by over $40M in funding and expanding opportunities to shape how advanced AI systems are developed and governed. Our work spans technical research, policy, and operations, including partnerships such as red-teaming frontier models with OpenAI and serving as the EU’s selected evaluator for CBRN risks. As the scope and impact of our work accelerate, building the right team is the most critical enabler of our success.

As FAR.AI’s first in-house recruiter, you will sit at the center of this growth. You will help scale the organization by identifying and attracting highly specialized, mission-driven talent across research, engineering, events, comms, and operations, while establishing thoughtful, high-integrity recruiting practices that reflect the seriousness of our work and intentionality of out culture. Working closely with leadership, you will shape not only how we grow, but who gets to build the future of advanced AI systems.

For recruiters who enjoy autonomy, building from first principles, and working on problems with long-term societal impact, this is a rare and meaningful opportunity.

If this sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you!

What You’ll Do
  • Own full-cycle recruiting for a diverse portfolio of roles, including technical and non-technical positions.

  • Manage an active requisition load of approximately 5–8 roles at a time, balancing speed, quality, and candidate experience.

  • Partner directly with hiring managers to scope roles, define success profiles, and advise on hiring strategy.

  • Proactively source candidates using a variety of channels and techniques, particularly for hard-to-fill roles.

  • Drive candidate assessment processes, including screening, coordination, and offer support.

  • Build and continuously improve recruiting foundations, processes, and documentation as the first in-house recruiter.

  • Represent FAR.AI professionally and clearly to candidates, ensuring a thoughtful and inclusive candidate experience.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of recruiting experience (mid-level), with a mix of technical and non-technical hiring

  • Demonstrated experience with sourcing and full-lifecycle recruiting

  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills

  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent requisitions (5–8) effectively

  • Experience coaching, advising, and partnering directly with hiring managers

  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment with a high degree of ownership

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Global or international recruiting experience

  • Experience hiring AI/ML, research, or highly technical talent

  • Project management experience related to hiring or operations

  • Background across both agency and in-house recruiting environments

  • Talent branding, employer marketing, or candidate engagement experience

Logistics

You will be a full-time employee of FAR.AI, a 501(c)(3) research non-profit.

  • Location: Berkeley, CA (onsite/hybrid) or Remote (with 5+ hours overlap with US PST/CST timezones).

  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week).

  • Compensation: $110,000-$140,000/year depending on experience. We will also pay for work-related travel and equipment expenses, and offer catered lunch and dinner at our office in Berkeley.

  • Hiring process: A phone screen, a task test, in-depth interviews with the team, and a half-day work trial, followed by reference checks.

If you have any questions about the role, please do get in touch at [email protected].
