Our first dedicated Cloud Network Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing our cloud network infrastructure. This is an opportunity to establish the practice of network engineering as you help our Infrastructure team support and expand our flagship dbt Cloud offering in AWS and Azure, with possibilities of further expansion.

The role will include designing resilient network architectures with an eye for availability, scalability, and security. Challenges include bringing flexible network architecture to life that supports both single and multi-tenanted deployments… and perhaps most importantly our new cell-based architecture.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Help us operate our network, including troubleshooting and monitoring (with the help of our SRE team). Promptly diagnose and resolve issues
  • Design network architecture - streamline and improve existing systems while also planning for the future as we expand our tenancy and cloud offerings
  • Review the network needs of developer teams as they develop new features and services - provide subject matter expertise
  • Configure and managing Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), routing, network security services (collaborating with our Security Engineering team), load balancing, DNS, and more
  • Reduce toil by automating standard operational tasks - and leveling up performance and reliability
  • Come up with novel solutions to allow our clients to securely connect their Data Warehouses to dbt Cloud - potentially regardless of where either is hosted. Expand our already robust PrivateLink offerings.
  • Improve our documentation for network configurations, processes, diagrams, and runbooks

You are a good fit if you have:

  • Worked asynchronously as part of a fully-remote, distributed team
  • Enjoy working collaboratively with product engineering and other stakeholders, including security, field engineering, customer support, and more!
  • Expertise in all layers of the OSI model, fundamental networking protocols (TCP, UDP, DHCP, DNS, HTTP, TLS, etc), VPNs, IPv4 and IPv6, etc
  • Proxy, reverse proxy, and load balancer experience
  • Experience or interest in operating at least some of the tools in our stack, including nginx, Istio, Envoy, AWS and Azure Load Balancer offerings, transit gateways, Route 53, Calico
  • Ability to write and understand scripts and automation in the language of your choice - at dbt Labs you’ll encounter Python, Go, and Bash with Terraform for IaC

You'll have an edge if you have:

  • Experience in multiple public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Terraform experience
  • Kubernetes networking experience
  • Experience defining an SLA and implementing metric collections and reporting for the network products you’ve developed

Optional:

Qualifications:

  • Have at least 8 years of experience
  • Completed enrolment in related bootcamp
