Position Description
Micron Technology Inc. is a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing. The Systems Integration Group designs and manufactures internal equipment to give Micron a competitive edge in the marketplace.
Our Equipment Software Design team is looking to hire a driven embedded firmware engineer. This engineer will build embedded software running on bare metal to embedded Linux as well as higher level interface software. You will work with other software engineers and other engineering disciplines to create custom in-house semiconductor equipment from the ground up. This role requires deep understanding of hardware and system behavior to design, debug, and optimize software that directly controls custom electronic systems.
Successful candidates for this role do more than write embedded code-they can reason about how complex electronic circuits behave, use lab measurements to validate assumptions, and work side-by-side with electrical engineers to root-cause system issues. If your experience is primarily application software or firmware development without deep hardware debug, this role is likely not a fit. This role is best suited for engineers who have personally debugged real hardware in the lab; coursework exposure, only debugging to the HAL or limited schematic familiarity alone is not enough.
If you like making things work, working in a lab, and overcoming the challenges that arise from integrating multiple complex systems, you'll enjoy this role.
Responsibilities
  • Design: Develop new and modify existing equipment in cross-discipline design teams (software, electrical, control, and mechanical engineers).
  • Code: Develop in C, C++, Bash, and Python on bare metal and under RHEL compatible Linux distros in containers.
  • Manufacture: Work with New Product Introduction, and Operation teams in the manufacturing of equipment.
  • Innovate: Our design team is challenged with projects to keep Micron competitive in the marketplace. Our designs frequently provide solutions that no one else has addressed. We design what doesn't exist yet.
  • Support: work to improve existing designs, responding to manufacturing and production support.
  • Hands-On Work: Daily hands-on work with electronics, computers, and in-house and third-party equipment in a lab environment.
  • Hardware Debug: Debug software-hardware interactions using schematics, layout plots, datasheets, and lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, SMUs) to independently root-cause system-level issues.
  • Collaborate: Work in a cross-discipline design team with members in Boise Idaho, San Jose California, Penang Malaysia, and Hyderabad India.

Primary responsibilities
  • Work closely with software, electrical, mechanical, and control engineers in the design and development of next-generation memory testers
  • Supporting existing testers
  • Develop/Debug in C, C++ for embedded environments
  • Develop/Debug in C++ and Python for the hardware interface environment
  • Use of lab equipment, schematics, and layout drawings for design bring-up and testing
  • Communication - written, spoken, creating technical documents
  • Supporting globally distributed team members

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 4+ years of embedded software development tightly coupled to custom hardware
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++
  • Demonstrated ability to read schematics and trace hardware/software interfaces during debug
  • Working knowledge of analog and mixed-signal circuits sufficient to understand signal paths, measurement techniques, and common failure modes
  • Hands-on experience using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and power supplies to debug real systems
  • Comfortable debugging issues that span firmware, board-level electronics, and electromechanical interactions
  • Experience and/or interest in Agentic AI code development and including Agentic workflows into current or future processes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ Years Experience in Embedded Software Interfacing with Hardware
  • Python and Bash proficiency
  • Proficiency in Linux and GNU tool chain
  • Ability to explain and debug analog front ends, ADC/DAC paths, and common noise/grounding issues
  • Experience programmatically interfacing with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, DMMs, SMUs)
  • Calibration Experience
  • Experience with Linux device interaction, drivers, or kernel-level debugging
  • Familiarity with PCIe software and hardware layers
