The Role
The Software Product Manager, Utility and Energy Markets helps define and execute GM Energy's utility and energy market software portfolio in partnership with Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders.
This role is focused on software solutions to scale GM Energy grid service capabilities including program enrollment, managed charging, interoperability, and the backend integrations required to support utility and grid service programs. The ideal candidate understands utility and DER standards such as IEEE 2030.5, OpenADR, and related protocol ecosystems, along with residential grid service models such as demand response, capacity, and ancillary services.
This person will work cross-functionally across business development, hardware, sales, CRM, go-to-market, engineering, and program management teams to translate external program requirements into scalable software solutions.
This position reports to the Group Product Manager, Home Energy and Utility Software.

What You'll Do
- Define and articulate the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for software products within the utility and energy markets, aligning with GM Energy's overall objectives.
- Conduct in-depth market research and competitive analysis to identify customer needs, market trends, and emerging technologies.
- Collaborate with engineering, design, and business teams using Agile and Waterfall methodologies to translate product requirements into detailed specifications and user stories.
- Lead the entire product lifecycle from concept to launch and post-launch optimization, ensuring successful product delivery and adoption.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of commercial aspects of the energy industry, including regulatory frameworks, utility operations, and energy market dynamics.
- Utilize Design Thinking principles to empathize with users, define problems, ideate solutions, prototype, and test new product features.
- Facilitate and lead Group Problem Solving sessions to address complex technical and business challenges.* Work closely with marketing and sales teams to develop compelling product messaging and go-to-market strategies.
- Monitor product performance, analyze key metrics, and iterate on products based on data-driven insights.
- Demonstrate strong Learning Agility to quickly adapt to new technologies, market shifts, and evolving business needs.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in software product management
- Experience owning software products from strategy and requirements through launch and iteration
- Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, design, and business stakeholders
- Proficiency with Agile product development
- Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and communication skills
- Ability to prioritize and execute in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
