At Midland States Bank, base salary is one component of our Total Rewards program. Exact compensation is determined by factors such as (but not limited to) education, skills, internal equity, and experience. This position offers additional compensation in the form of short-term incentives (i.e. bonus and/or commission) and may include long-term incentives (i.e. stock awards). Solutions Engineer - DBA

Salary Range: $76,900 - $102,500+ annually

 

Position Summary

 

The Solutions Engineer - DBA is responsible for the reliable, secure, and highly available operation of Midland’s enterprise database and data integration platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. The role supports Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), ETL, SFTP, workload automation, and end-to-end data flows. Using a DevOps for Data approach, the position automates deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and recovery while supporting high availability, disaster recovery, performance optimization, cloud integration, data governance, and emerging AI-enabled database technologies.

 

Primary Accountabilities


Job Specific

 

  • Administer and support Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database across on-premises, Microsoft Azure, and OCI environments, including Oracle Autonomous Database and related cloud database services.
  • Support SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Windows Server Failover Clustering, cross-site replication, high availability, disaster recovery, failover/failback, and recovery testing.
  • Perform database performance tuning, backup and recovery, patching, upgrades, migrations, indexing, security administration, capacity management, and database connectivity support.
  • Monitor database health, availability, logs, performance metrics, wait events, blocking, storage, capacity, and alerts using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), AWR/ASH, SQL Server monitoring tools, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and similar observability platforms.
  • Manage database secrets, credentials, encryption keys, wallets, and SSL/TLS certificates using technologies such as Azure Key Vault, OCI Vault, Oracle Wallet, and TDE key management, including secure storage, access control, expiration monitoring, and rotation.
  • Apply DevOps and CI/CD practices to database administration using source control, automated deployment pipelines, database scripts, configuration-as-code, testing, approvals, rollback, and repeatable change processes.
  • Develop and maintain SQL, PowerShell, Python, Linux shell, API, and other automation supporting database administration, operational processes, job scheduling, workload automation, monitoring, alerting, and failure recovery.
  • Support Windows Server infrastructure associated with SQL Server, including Failover Clustering, networking, DNS, SAN storage, and related components, and support Linux administration associated with enterprise Oracle environments.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues spanning databases, operating systems, storage, networks, applications, monitoring platforms, and cloud services; partner with Application and Data Engineering teams and vendors on cross-functional resolution.
  • Support ETL, data integration, enterprise data movement, SFTP/managed file transfer, APIs, scheduling platforms, and end-to-end application/data flows involving Oracle and SQL Server.
  • Create and maintain Data Flow Diagrams, data lineage, metadata, system dependencies, and database integration documentation; support data governance, security controls, auditing, compliance, and impact analysis.
  • Evaluate and support AI-enabled database technologies, LLM/API integrations, natural-language database interaction, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Oracle AI Database capabilities, Infrastructure/Configuration as Code, and other emerging automation technologies; identify opportunities to improve observability, security, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • The role requires occasional travel for training, team meetings, and due diligence events.
  • May require work in a Midland office to ensure collaboration and support of internal and external customers. 
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

 

Education/Experience

 

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a similar degree, with 5+ years of experience in IT System Administration, DevOps Engineering, software engineering, database administration, or a related technical role.
  • Strong hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database in enterprise production environments, including performance tuning, backup/recovery, patching, upgrades, migrations, indexing, security, capacity management, and connectivity.
  • Experience with SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Windows Server Failover Clustering, cross-site replication, high availability, disaster recovery, and Windows infrastructure; working knowledge of Linux administration for Oracle environments.
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring and observability, including OEM, AWR/ASH, SQL Server monitoring tools, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or similar platforms, with proactive monitoring of health, logs, metrics, waits, blocking, storage, capacity, and alerts.
  • Experience managing database secrets, credentials, encryption keys, wallets, and SSL/TLS certificates using Azure Key Vault, OCI Vault, Oracle Wallet, TDE key management, or equivalent enterprise solutions.
  • Experience applying DevOps and CI/CD practices to database administration, including Git or similar source control, automated deployments, database scripting, configuration-as-code, testing, approvals, rollback, and change control; strong scripting/automation skills using SQL, PowerShell, Python, Linux shell, and APIs.
  • Hands-on experience supporting databases in Microsoft Azure and OCI, including cloud networking, storage, security, authentication, database services, connectivity, and Oracle Autonomous Database or other Oracle Cloud database services.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise job scheduling, ETL/data integration, data movement, APIs, SFTP/managed file transfer, and end-to-end application/data flows; Informatica or similar ETL/data integration platform experience is preferred.
  • Ability to support cross-functional technical troubleshooting and vendor calls; create Data Flow Diagrams, data lineage, metadata, dependency, and integration documentation; and apply knowledge of data governance, security controls, auditing, compliance, and impact analysis. Exposure to AI/LLM integration, MCP, Oracle AI Database capabilities, and automated provisioning/configuration is preferred.
