Position Title: Technical Training Specialist

Position Location: Remote – Work from Anywhere in the United States


JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Training Specialist is responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining technical training programs that support training and skill development across Smart Tech Contracting’s Building Automation and Critical Infrastructure project delivery roles. This role is part of the Business Management Office (BMO) and focuses on enabling consistent, high-quality performance across systems engineers, field technicians, service technicians, and controls programmers.


The Technical Training Specialist ensures new hires and existing employees are equipped with the technical knowledge, tools, and best practices required to execute their roles effectively. This includes structured onboarding, role-based training paths, and ongoing technical development aligned with BMO standards and project delivery expectations.


This role owns technical training programs end-to-end, including content development, hands-on training delivery, competency validation, and continuous improvement. The Technical Training Specialist partners closely with subject matter experts and leadership to ensure training aligns with real-world project execution and evolving business needs.


This person will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Technical Training Development & Delivery (40%)

  • Develop, maintain, and deliver technical training programs including but not limited to systems engineers, field technicians, service technicians, and controls programmers
  • Facilitate instructor-led training, hands-on workshops, and virtual learning sessions
  • Translate technical systems, tools, and field practices into structured training content
  • Support rollout of new technologies, tools, and standards through targeted training initiatives
  • Adapt training materials to different roles, experience levels, and learning styles


New Hire Onboarding & Role Enablement (25%)

  • Lead technical onboarding for new hires across multiple disciplines
  • Ensure consistent, role-specific onboarding experiences aligned with BMO standards
  • Partner with HR, BMO, and functional leaders to align onboarding with business needs
  • Reinforce technical expectations, safety standards, and best practices during onboarding


Skills Development & Competency Alignment (20%)

  • Support development and maintenance of role-based skills and competency frameworks
  • Align training content with defined competencies and career paths
  • Design and validate technical proficiency through assessments, hands-on evaluation, and feedback
  • Track training participation, completion, and effectiveness metrics


Continuous Improvement & Field Alignment (15%)

  • Gather feedback from trainees, field teams, and leadership to improve training programs
  • Update content to reflect changes in systems, tools, and standards
  • Partner with field and engineering teams to ensure training reflects real project conditions
  • Support BMO initiatives related to training, standardization, and operational excellence


Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget Performs

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ADVANCED LEVEL FOR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING)

  • 5+ Years in field experience in building automation, controls systems, or a related technical field
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams, sequences of operations, or commissioning documentation
  • Familiarity with field operations including installation, programming, testing, and commissioning workflows
  • Experience applying adult learning principles to technical content for trades professionals
  • Experience building and administering content within a learning management system
  • Ability to manage SCORM or LTI-compliant content in an LMS environment
  • Experience with role-based skills matrices, competency frameworks, or proficiency rubrics
  • Familiarity with BAS manufacturer training resources such as Niagara, Distech, or Rockwell
  • Demonstrated ability to develop structured curricula including objectives, sequencing, and assessments
  • Experience extracting technical knowledge from SMEs and converting it into training content
  • Experience coordinating with external training providers, associations, or certification bodies
  • Strong facilitation and communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to design hands-on assessments that validate proficiency beyond course completion
  • Ability to track and report on KPIs including completion rates and time-to-proficiency
  • Comfortable managing multiple concurrent training tracks with competing timelines
  • Ability to translate complex processes, systems, and standards into clear, practical training content
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across departments
  • Ability to independently manage assigned training programs with minimal supervision
  • Ability to exercise judgment when adapting training content to different delivery roles and experience levels

  • Frequently required to remain in a stationary position
  • Frequently moving through office, commercial, and jobsite environments
  • On occasion may move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds


TRAVEL / RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Up to 10%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states.
  • Must be located near a major US airport.
  • Effective May 7, 2025, and in accordance with U.S. federal regulations for domestic air travel, a valid REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport) is required for travel associated with this position.
  • Travel may involve transportation by car or plane depending on the destination and nature of the business need.
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meetings for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.


EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ Years in field experience in building automation, controls systems, or a related technical field
  • 3+ years of experience in training, learning & development, project delivery support, or operational enablement roles.
  • Experience developing and delivering training content in a professional or technical environment.
  • Proficiency with common training delivery methods (in-person, virtual, and self-paced).
  • Experience working across engineering, software programming, installation, testing, commissioning, and project management functions


Preferred (Not Required):

  • Experience supporting project management, construction, engineering, or technology-driven organizations
  • Experience operating within PMO, BMO, or operational governance structures
  • Experience with learning management systems (LMS) or training tracking tools
  • Professional training or facilitation certification
