About Base

Base is America’s next-generation power company. We’re rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization–electricity–by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.

About the Role

We generate large amounts of data both in the lab and in the field from our hardware telemetry, high and low speed lab equipment, videos, and our massive distributed energy resource fleet. As a Test Data Systems Engineer, you will be the bridge between raw hardware signals and actionable engineering insights.

What You’ll Do

  • Diverse Data Integration: Design and manage the ingestion of disparate datasets - including CAN telemetry, thermal chamber logs, power supply/grid sim/power analyzer readings, video feeds, etc - such that they can be synchronized for event-based analysis.

  • System Architecture & Data Modeling: Build the foundational data structures and schemas required to store vast amounts of time-series hardware data in a way that remains searchable, performant, and scalable.

  • Visualization & Accessibility: Develop and maintain platforms that allow cross-functional teams to easily query, overlay, and visualize multi-modal data to identify trends, anomalies, and test failures.

  • Fleet Intelligence & Prognostics: Organize and structure field/fleet data to support reliability engineering efforts, specifically focusing on tracking failure distributions and developing metrics for field damage models.

  • Data Integrity & Standardization: Ensure that "source of truth" datasets are consistent across lab environments and field deployments.

What You'll Bring

  • Data Engineering Foundation: 3+ years in a hardware, software, or business role organizing and analyzing data to uncover causes/trends

  • A strong background in building data infrastructure, with a deep understanding of how to architect databases

  • Programming Proficiency: Strong coding skills in Python, R, or similar used for data manipulation, automation of ETL processes, and building custom visualization interfaces.

  • Problem-Solving Mindset: The ability to look at a "data swamp" of disconnected log files and envision a structured system that makes that data actionable for a whole organization

About This Team

The Hardware Reliability and Test team ensures our equipment exceeds engineering and reliability standards through rigorous mechanical, electrical, and environmental testing at the component, sub-assembly, and system levels. When we find failure points, we leverage data-driven insights to identify root causes and provide actionable improvements and mitigations. We act as a tight feedback loop for the design team, accelerating product maturity and ensuring we deliver a stellar experience for our members.

Our Values
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.

  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.

  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.

  • Everyone’s an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.

  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.

  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we’re creating. We work in-person. It’s not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.

  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.

Do the best work of your life at Base.
