About Blue J

Blue J is the leading generative AI solution for tax professionals and one of Canada's fastest-growing AI companies. Headquartered in Toronto, we're a high-growth B2B SaaS company building industry-leading tax research software that helps accountants find accurate answers to complex tax questions with greater speed and confidence.

Backed by a $122M USD Series D funding round, we're scaling rapidly across North America and the UK while continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible with AI. By combining advanced technology with deep tax expertise, we empower tax professionals to work more efficiently, make better decisions, and deliver greater value to their clients.

A Note on Location

This is a remote-first position, open to candidates legally eligible to work in the United States. For in-person collaboration, you’ll have the opportunity to travel to our Toronto office every quarter to connect with the broader team.

To help you get off to a great start, we bring all new team members together for their first three days of onboarding. If you’re based outside of our local commuting area, Blue J will arrange and cover your travel and accommodation.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Tax Lawyer or Tax Accountant with 3–5 years of experience in federal tax to join our product team as an Associate, Tax Research (US). Our ideal candidate is well-versed in the fundamentals of U.S. federal taxation and has developed an area of expertise within federal tax. As an Associate, Tax Research (US) joining our team of tax experts, you will use your tax expertise to play a central role in continuing to develop Blue J, our large language model-enabled tax research tool. In this role, you will gain invaluable experience and learn from some of the best in the field of AI and tax.

While we’re an AI company, professional experience in AI is not required. We’re looking for someone who loves tax and is passionate about how technology can make tax law more transparent and accessible. Your expertise will be instrumental in helping our team as we move this mission forward and take Blue J to new heights. We’re a team of passionate, driven, and friendly people all working towards the same goal, and can’t wait to see the contributions you will make!

If this sounds like something that you’re excited about, we would love to meet you!

What You’ll be Doing

  • U.S. Federal Tax Research:
    • Use your excellent tax research and writing skills and tax knowledge to quickly locate and summarize relevant primary and secondary sources.
    • Understand and summarize various tax law questions.
    • Evaluate sources for accuracy and currency.
    • Efficiently assess source documents to support your analysis.
    • Adapt quickly to researching different areas of tax law.
    • Assess the quality and accuracy of AI-generated tax analysis.

  • Teamwork:
    • You will use your tax expertise to collaborate with tax lawyers, accountants, and a cross-functional team of developers and data scientists to build and improve our AI tools, while developing strong relationships across the tax research, data science, and technology teams.
    • You will thrive in our environment where diverse thoughts are welcome and innovation is encouraged.
    • Experience in programming and data science is not necessary – just an open mind and an eagerness to collaborate.

  • Strategic Thinking:
    • As a core member of our product team, you will have a sense of pride and ownership, constantly thinking strategically and critically about how we can continuously improve the Blue J products.

  • Evolving Based on Client Needs:
    • Our goal is to work in true partnership with our customers (tax professionals) by listening to their feedback, troubleshooting issues, and incorporating their recommendations to consistently and reliably add value to our tax platforms.
    • A key skill in this role is adaptability and openness to new ideas.

What You Offer Blue J

  • We’re looking for a lawyer or accountant who is passionate about federal tax and is excited about innovation and AI. Experience in tech isn’t required—we’re looking for someone eager to apply their transferable skills. Here are a few things we’re looking for:

    • Accounting firm experience is a positive
    • Passion for using technology to improve the tax profession and being part of that change
    • An open mind and eagerness to learn
  • Comfortable leveraging AI tools and emerging technologies to drive efficiency, improve workflows, and stay ahead of industry trends

  • A mission-driven culture where your work directly advances clarity, efficiency, and accessibility in tax research.
  • Competitive base salary, stock options, and benefits designed to support you and your family.
  • Flexibility in how you work: primarily remote, with occasional travel to our Toronto office and conferences as needed.

Final compensation will be set fairly and thoughtfully based on experience, expertise, and alignment with the role’s responsibilities. While all candidates are expected to bring directly relevant experience, the top of the range is typically reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional depth in the role’s core competencies, a strong track record of impact in similar environments, and the ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy from day one.
