Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era

At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. Simply said, we help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers, working together to shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.

Commerce is looking for a Lead Technical Product Manager to drive the execution and evolution of Catalyst, BigCommerce's next-generation storefront architecture powered by Next.js, React, and the Storefront GraphQL API.

BigCommerce, part of the Commerce brand family, helps merchants increase sales at every stage of their growth. From small startups to mid-market businesses and large enterprises, we provide the leading e-commerce platform. Our customers can then concentrate on what's most important: growing their businesses. We enable our customers to build, innovate, and grow, collectively reshaping the e-commerce industry.

Our platform currently serves tens of thousands of developers globally, processing billions of dollars in merchant revenue annually. Catalyst is the architectural forcing function moving BigCommerce toward a public-API-first, composable commerce platform — and you'll be at the center of it. The ecosystem spans the Storefront GraphQL API, a versioned SDK framework, a Reference Theme, Checkout modernization, B2B integration, Native Hosting on Cloudflare Workers, and a Visual Builder integration. You'll own the product vision and execution across all of them.

This is not a traditional PM role. You'll be designing TypeScript SDK APIs, defining GraphQL schema contracts, shaping the developer experience for a Next.js framework, and architecting a hosting product on Cloudflare's edge platform. You need to be as comfortable reading code as you are writing a roadmap — able to run the product locally, open a PR when something needs fixing, and go deep on technical decisions without waiting for someone to explain them. That doesn't mean you know everything, it means you're willing to go figure it out.

To be considered, the applicant must reside in the United States.

We have a preference for candidates located in Austin, TX or Atlanta, GA.

What You'll Do

Product Strategy

  • Define and maintain the Catalyst roadmap across all product lanes, ensuring they converge into a coherent product strategy

  • Define the vision for the product experience through sketches, mockups, prototypes, and written documentation

  • Prioritize the execution path by making smart trade-offs — balancing developer experience improvements, feature support, hosting infrastructure, and architectural modernization against finite team capacity

  • Define the public API surface for SDKs, including versioning semantics, TypeScript interfaces, and developer-facing contracts

  • Lead the modernization of adjacent product areas into native, API-first implementations within the Catalyst framework

  • Drive the Native Hosting product from alpha through GA — including CLI experience, deployment architecture, custom domain assignment, usage metering, and pricing strategy

  • Own monetization strategy and product growth drivers for Native Hosting and the broader Catalyst ecosystem

  • Establish KPIs and monitor performance against goals: live storefronts, GMV, churn rate, reported bugs, MRR, and partner sentiment

  • Understand and monitor the competitive landscape — Shopify Hydrogen, Vercel Commerce, and the broader composable commerce ecosystem

  • Build dashboards, living reports, and automations to make metrics self-serve and scale your time

  • Identify potential issues early and develop contingency plans

  • Ensure APIs, SDKs, and documentation are structured so that AI coding agents can build on the platform effectively

Drive Developer Excellence

  • Champion developer experience as a primary competitive advantage — targeting fast time to live storefront

  • Build comprehensive SDK strategies that ensure consistency while respecting language and framework idioms

  • Design documentation architectures that serve both human developers and AI agents effectively

  • Cultivate a thriving developer community through authentic engagement, technical content, and ecosystem partnerships

Stakeholder Alignment & Communication

  • Manage expectations with internal stakeholders to set your engineering team up for success. Frame cross-team work within a unified narrative so that what customers see as "the Catalyst Roadmap" reflects the full picture

  • Write and publish public documentation and release notes. Own the Features Doc, Roadmap Doc, and Release Notes as the single source of truth for what Catalyst supports and what's coming next

  • Write regular initiative-level updates for internal stakeholders. Concise, clear, no fluff

  • Ensure partner GTM teams are properly enabled with product information, pricing, packaging, and sales enablement materials

  • Build relationships with customers and partners to gather feedback. Engage directly with partners, agencies, and merchants — validate priorities and set realistic expectations

  • Coordinate cross-team dependencies across Storefront, Checkout, B2B, Makeswift, and Infrastructure teams to ensure API-first development flows through the full stack

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders including Marketing, Business Development, Sales, and Engineering leadership

Who You Are

Must-Haves

  • 5+ years of technical product management experience, with at least 2 years focused on developer platforms, SDKs, APIs, or framework-level products

  • Deep, hands-on fluency with modern front-end web technology: TypeScript, React, Next.js (App Router, RSC, streaming), and Node.js

  • Strong understanding of GraphQL API design — schema modeling, query patterns, and the tradeoffs of exposing platform capabilities through a public API surface

  • Experience with edge computing platforms, serverless architecture, or infrastructure products — ideally Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, KV, and R2

  • Demonstrated ability to take a complex, multi-team technical initiative from vision through phased execution to GA

  • A pragmatic, iterative approach to execution: you break ambiguous problems into concrete deliverables with clear exit criteria

  • Experience owning pricing, packaging, and go-to-market strategy for technical products — not just feature specs

  • Comfort operating at the intersection of engineering, design, and go-to-market — you can write a technical RFC in the morning and a sales enablement brief in the afternoon

  • Excellent written communication. Concise, precise, and high-signal. You'll be authoring developer documentation, strategy docs, roadmap materials, and release notes

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with ecommerce platforms, headless commerce, or composable architecture patterns

  • Familiarity with visual builder / CMS products and their integration into developer frameworks

  • Experience building or managing developer CLI tools and scaffolding workflows.

  • Background in developer relations, developer experience, or open-source product management

  • Understanding of OAuth 2.0, JWT, and modern API security patterns

  • Experience with API monetization and usage-based pricing models

Why This Role Matters

This position sits at the intersection of three massive trends in reshaping commerce:

API Economy Growth: The API management market is growing 25% annually to $32.77 billion

Ecommerce Acceleration: Digital commerce continues its exponential growth trajectory

AI Agent Revolution: Autonomous commerce agents will fundamentally transform how purchases happen — and storefronts need to be built for this future

Catalyst is how BigCommerce meets all three. You'll have the opportunity to define the storefront architecture that powers the next generation of commerce experiences. Your work will directly impact thousands of developers, over 50,000 retailers, and billions of consumers worldwide.

Culture

This team operates with a bias toward ownership and execution. A few things that matter here:

  • Own it end to end. The product experience starts when someone first hears about Catalyst and doesn't stop until they're live in production. Positioning, pricing, packaging, docs, onboarding — it's all yours. No detail is too small

  • Outcomes over activities. We don't measure success by how many meetings you attended or docs you wrote. We measure it by whether the product is winning

  • Be technical. You don't need to know everything, but you need to be willing to dig in and figure it out. Read the code. Run the product. Understand the architecture

  • Communicate with precision. Write clearly, write often, and make every word count

Work Options

The position can be fully remote but there is a preference for on-site/hybrid in Austin, TX or Atlanta, GA. For candidates based in Austin, Tx or Atlanta, GA this role follows a hybrid work model, with three days per week in the office to balance focused individual work and meaningful in-person collaboration.

Hiring Process

Our process is designed to assess your technical depth, product thinking, and ability to drive execution across complex systems. At a high level:

  • Recruiter phone screen

  • Hiring manager screen

  • Take-home exercise (product/technical scenario)

  • Technical deep-dive interview (exercise follow-up)

  • Final stage (cross-functional and cultural interview)
