This role is for someone that thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about empowering engineers to do the best work in their careers. You’ll need to balance shipping an ambitious roadmap, improving the stability and performance of mission critical systems that power billions of dollars in commerce transactions, and mentoring and coaching engineers and leaders.

To be considered, the applicant must reside in the United States.

We have a preference for candidates located in Austin, TX or Atlanta, GA.

What You’ll Do:

  • Drive the technical roadmap for BigCommerce’s storefront experiences.

  • Establish a culture of strong ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Improve quality across performance, reliability, observability, scalability, and security.

  • Partner with Product to deliver excellent merchant and developer experiences across both Stencil and Catalyst.

  • Lead Stencil modernization efforts: evolving the framework’s rendering pipeline, improving existing themes and creating new ones, and modernizing the visual editing experience by integrating Makeswift.

  • Lead Catalyst’s continued growth: expand its core feature set, implement new capabilities in B2B commerce, and deliver a new hosting product.

  • Establish team objectives aligned with business goals and ensure the team executes against them.

  • Facilitate regular 1:1s, healthy feedback cycles, and engineering rituals (e.g., design reviews, knowledge sharing, retros, etc.).

  • Participate in on-call and be responsible for incident management.

Who You Are:Must-Haves
  • 5–7+ years of experience in building and operating production systems, comfortable with front-end, back-end, and infrastructure.

  • 2+ years of experience managing & retaining high-performing software engineering teams.

  • Strong technical background with an ability to lead technical strategy and architectural discussions.

  • A pragmatic approach to execution: you think iteratively and break down problems into deliverable slices.

  • Comfortable operating across multiple codebases and teams.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with Next.js and modern web architecture (e.g., edge computing, web performance, etc.)

  • Experience with GraphQL and API platforms.

  • Familiarity with ecommerce platforms.

  • Experience supporting ecosystems like app or theme marketplaces and partner integrations.
