Job Description:
Lower is building technology that powers digital mortgage, home finance, automation, and AI-powered experiences across the homeownership journey.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll solve complex technical problems, design scalable systems, and work closely with engineers, Product, Design, QA, and other partners to deliver reliable software that improves how people experience homeownership.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who combines strong software engineering fundamentals with sound technical judgment, curiosity, and a collaborative mindset. You should be comfortable working across modern technologies, learning new frameworks and languages when needed, and using AI-assisted development tools to increase the speed and effectiveness of how you design, build, test, and maintain software.

You’ll have meaningful ownership of the systems and projects you work on while contributing to the technical decisions, engineering practices, and team culture that help Lower build great software at scale.

Work Location: Hybrid in either Columbus, OH (preferred); Austin, TX
Work Type: Full-time W2 employment, visa sponsorship is not available for this position at this time.

What you’ll do:
Technical Skills
  • System design & architecture: Design scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems, evaluating tradeoffs across performance, complexity, cost, and long-term maintainability.
  • Full-stack development: Design, develop, test, and maintain reliable software across frontend, backend, APIs, services, and data layers.
  • Code quality & testing: Build well-tested software using unit, integration, end-to-end, and other appropriate testing approaches while maintaining a high bar for code quality.
  • Performance optimization: Profile, debug, troubleshoot, and optimize application and system performance.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Contribute to deployment pipelines, monitoring, observability, release management, and the ongoing operation of production systems.
  • Security awareness: Apply secure development practices and consider security, privacy, and compliance throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Data & APIs: Design and consume APIs and work effectively with relational, document, or other data stores appropriate to the problem.
  • Tooling, automation & AI-assisted development: Use AI-assisted development tools and automation to accelerate implementation, debugging, testing, documentation, research, and technical problem solving while applying strong engineering judgment to validate correctness, maintainability, security, and architectural fit.
Collaboration & Leadership
  • Stakeholder communication: Translate business and product needs into thoughtful technical solutions, clearly communicating technical approaches, tradeoffs, risks, and dependencies.
  • Mentorship: Support other engineers through technical guidance, pairing, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Code review: Promote readability, maintainability, reliability, and scalability through thoughtful and constructive code reviews.
  • Engineering influence: Contribute to technical design discussions and engineering decisions, helping teams evaluate options and make sound technical choices.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with engineers, Product, Design, QA, and business partners to build solutions that meet both customer and technical needs.
Project & Execution
  • Project ownership: Own meaningful features and technical projects from discovery and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Risk management: Identify technical risks, dependencies, scalability constraints, and sources of technical debt early and help determine appropriate solutions.
  • Tradeoff negotiation: Make pragmatic tradeoffs between speed, quality, complexity, cost, and long-term maintainability and clearly communicate the reasoning behind technical decisions.
  • Documentation: Produce and maintain clear technical documentation for systems, designs, processes, and important engineering decisions.
  • Continuous improvement: Identify opportunities to improve engineering practices, developer workflows, tooling, automation, and system quality.
Strategic Impact
  • Technical direction: Contribute to architectural and technical decisions within your area of ownership while considering how those decisions affect adjacent systems and teams.
  • Innovation: Proactively identify new technologies, AI capabilities and skills, frameworks, tools, or approaches that can improve engineering effectiveness or create business value.
  • Quality bar setting: Advocate for engineering excellence while balancing delivery speed with reliability and maintainability.

Who you are:
  • Full-stack expertise with proven ability to deliver high-quality backend and frontend solutions.
  • Problem solver and innovator with a track record of implementing new ideas and tackling complex technical challenges in design and architecture.
  • Proficiency in our stack—TypeScript, React, AWS, Next.js, Node.js, C#/.NET, Go and Postgres—or the ability to quickly learn new languages, frameworks, and tools.
  • AI-assisted development: Experience leveraging AI-assisted software development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, debugging, testing, and developer efficiency.
  • Strong computer science foundations, including algorithms, data structures, concurrency, parallelism, asynchronous programming, networking, and system design.
  • Project ownership: Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex technical problems and own meaningful features or projects through design, development, deployment, and production support.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills—someone who brings strong opinions held loosely, engages debate without ego, gives and receives feedback constructively, and helps foster a supportive engineering culture. We’re looking for someone people want to design alongside.
  • Prior experience in fintech, lending, or consumer financial products is a plus, but not required.

What you'll get:
  • Extended benefit offerings including medical/dental/vision, parental leave, life insurance, short- and long-term disability
  • Paid holidays and paid time off
  • 401K with company match
  • Discount on home mortgage refinances or purchase
