What you will do

Under general direction the Wastewater & Bioenergy team, within PI360e, the Wastewater & Bioenergy Specialist will contribute as a member of the project development team and is responsible for supporting and managing the technical proposal development and technical due diligence for wastewater and bioenergy projects during the preliminary sales and development stages.  The Wastewater & Bioenergy Specialist functions as the primary technical expert and resource for projects under qualification and through development. This includes the vetting of project feasibility, specifications and requirements, providing technical support to the development team, and developing design documents, drawings, and cost estimates. Provides conceptual designs and oversees detailed designs of wastewater projects including site layouts and annual energy yield estimates.  In addition, the Wastewater & Bioenergy Specialist will also provide incentive management, interconnection utility coordination, and maintain a key network of partners in engineering firms and other necessary ecosystem players. Technically supports and takes a lead role in the qualification, development, engineering construction and commissioning and startup phases of wastewater and/or bioenergy projects. 

How you will do it

Engineering:

  • Execute preliminary evaluations to determine wastewater and bioenergy opportunities.  A focus will be given, where possible, to bioenergy projects, to align with strategic initiatives.

  • Prepare technical responses to proposals, including quantitative vetting of improvement opportunities and written descriptions.

  • Perform technical evaluations to estimate project size and revenues for bioenergy and wastewater opportunities. Support AEs to understanding and present our solutions.

  • Support project development, including engineering and design, construction, procurement, and post-installation services.  This includes:

    • Prepare conceptual engineering diagrams, scopes of work, and equipment selections in order to execute on wastewater opportunities identified in preliminary evaluations.

    • When using through third parties, oversee and manage engineering– including writing engineering work orders, holding regular progress meetings to stay involved in the process, and actively managing to make sure the engineering product matches the JCI intent

    • Review engineering design documents, including drawings and specifications, throughout design to confirm that the project objectives are being met. 

    • Support internal teams by providing technical support on specification review, progress tracking, and working in an integration role for various technical disciplines.

  • Discuss and resolve technical issues with project stakeholders, including engineers, procurement and construction teams, and design phase managers.

  • Provide troubleshooting for systems during construction or in post-installation, as needed based on project specifics.

  • Represent the wastewater engineering team as technical subject matter expert on external calls with clients, independent engineers and suppliers.

Business Development:

  • Formulate, revise, and track target lists for national bioenergy opportunities.   Work with regional local government AEs on pursuits within their jurisdiction.

  • Maintain network with utilities and brokerage firms for bioenergy projects

  • Work with the team to identify opportunities to streamline the engineering process. Help develop QAQC plans to standardize the development and construction management process.

  • Provides conceptual designs and oversees detailed designs of wastewater projects including site layouts and annual energy yield estimates.

  • Collaborate with engineering team members in decision making with clients, procurement and internal leadership on technical items that inform commercial design decisions and internal design risk management.

  • Support the review of contract exhibits, scopes of work and technical documentation related to design, commissioning, and performance of improvement measures.

  • Participate in industry trade shows and maintain an active role in the Water Environment Federation and/or its local Member Association (e.g. Rocky Mountain WEA).  Ideally, maintain committee participation and deliver technical presentations.

Travel: Travel to support preliminary evaluations, customer meetings and business case presentations, etc. Travel up to 30%.

General:

  • Contribute to company-wide initiatives to drive continual improvements in efficiency, tools, processes, and execution.

  • Initiate and lead continuous improvement efforts for the Wastewater & Bioenergy team, including leading tool development, process refinement, and lessons learned activities.

  • Support company-wide safety measures and incorporate safety principles into project design.

Advanced level of knowledge in:

  • Wastewater quality process control and engineering

  • Data analysis

  • Traditional and Alternative Project Flow, including Scheduling Concepts, Bidding Process, Equipment Specifications, and Drawing Reviews

  • MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)

  • Some concentration of experience in at least one of the following: biogas utilization, landfill gas utilization, energy efficiency, and renewable energy concepts

  • Ability to evaluate new technologies, including advanced biosolids processing and secondary treatment systems

What we look for

Bachelor's degree in civil / environmental engineering, or related wastewater field with two to five years’ experience in wastewater and energy projects (renewable natural gas experience preferred).  Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.  Proficiency in treatment process design and operations required.  An understanding and knowledge of planning, development, design and construction related to resource recovery including biosolids, reclaimed water, and biogas strongly desired, including utility interconnections, aeration and pump system design, and solids handling scopes of work.  Strong entrepreneurial interest and experience engaging clients to identify and win new projects. Excellent communication skills, including experience conveying technical presentations to clients and regulators.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $112,100 - $168,400 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)  This position includes a competitive benefits package.
