Senior Software Engineer, Java- Site Reliability

About the Role

NinjaOne is looking for a Senior Software Engineer who enjoys both building software and making sure it runs reliably at scale. You’ll develop Java and Kotlin services for our IT Operations product suite, then help those services perform well in production as NinjaOne grows. Providing clean and optimized coding solutions, you’ll work to develop high quality software applications that exceed our customers’ expectations – seriously our customers love our products.

Our systems help customers administer, protect, and maintain millions of endpoints and servers worldwide. In this role, you’ll work on product improvements and the reliability challenges that come with operating a large-scale cloud service: performance, scalability, observability, and recovery when things go wrong. You’ll work closely with other engineers to solve problems in the code and improve how we run it.

We are engineers, technology leaders and experts. We create and deliver mission critical services to enable NinjaOne’s customers to administer, protect and maintain millions of endpoints and servers. You will have the opportunity to design and develop high-availability mission critical software systems that support our worldwide operations.

Location - We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states - CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OR, OH, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

We hire the best software engineers, but experience in our stack can’t hurt: NinjaOne is built on Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang and Postgres; supporting millions of user endpoints and running as a scalable cloud service in AWS. Experience with large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design, and client-server architecture will help you succeed here.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Build and improve software: Design, develop, test, and ship Java and Kotlin services and product improvements used at large scale.
  • Own reliability in production: Investigate performance and availability issues, identify their causes, and make lasting improvements to the services you help build.
  • Improve scalability: Find bottlenecks in application code, data access, and service interactions; design changes that let our systems grow reliably.
  • Make systems easier to operate: Improve the visibility engineers have into service health, so problems can be detected, understood, and resolved more effectively.
  • Work across the full life of a service: Contribute to design decisions, code reviews, testing, deployment, and production troubleshooting alongside your fellow engineers.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
  • 10+ years of Java software development experience for product applications, or equivalent experience. Strong Kotlin experience will make you a standout candidate.
  • 4+ years of experience working with highly scalable software systems.
  • Experience diagnosing and improving the reliability, performance, and scalability of services in production.
  • Strong object-oriented design skills and experience applying design principles to complex software systems.
  • Knowledge of API best practices and REST service development using frameworks such as Jersey or Spring.
  • Relational database design and development experience, including experience identifying and addressing data access bottlenecks.
  • Experience with asynchronous application design and client-server communication.
  • Experience troubleshooting production systems and participating in incident response.
  • Strong testing practices and a commitment to building software that is dependable in production.
  • Experience with caching systems, especially Redis, will make you a standout candidate.
  • Python experience is a plus.
