Actionable Tips from Phil Weiser, Dean of CU Law School

If you are an entrepreneur who thinks that staying holed up in your office glued to your computer or phone will grow your business, think again!

Here are four great lessons from Handshakin Guest Phil Weiser, Dean of CU Law School and Executive Director of Silicon Flatirons Center in Boulder, Co.

  1. Take a Hike!
Well, realistically, a walk — and without your device. Rather than keeping your head down and your focus on your screen, take some time alone outside. “The best ideas are going to come to you when you allow time for reflection,” Weiser counsels. Weiser also suggests that long showers are another potential place to generate new ideas and inspiration. I prefer the steam shower in our new co-working space in Denver, CO.

2. Embrace Walking Meetings
“People don’t do enough walking meetings,” Weiser points out. He reminds viewers that it’s good for entrepreneurs to both as regular business meetings as well as to walk independently on their own to come up with new ideas.

3. Test Drive Your New Ideas
Weiser advises entrepreneurs to do something with their new ideas once they’ve generated them. “Allow the space for great ideas to come to you,” he suggests, “and then don’t be afraid to try them.” One of our favorite quotes from all guests is “Do something today, even if it turns out to be the wrong decision.” Just do it. Seriously.

4. Don’t Be a Stranger
Weiser says, “People sometimes think, ‘Gosh, this person’s so busy, I can’t talk to them.’ That’s not true. We’re all people just like you who love to help one another. So don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for it.” So, make sure you reach out when you think about it. Take action!
